History of Fulltime Commercial Classical Radio Stations in the State of Oregon?

Hello, I was wondering about the history of Fulltime Commercial Classical Music Radio Stations in the State Of Oregon? I am not interested in the Non-Commercial College type of Classical Stations but the ones that derived revenue from commercials? I know of a few Portland stations like KKSN-910 which was Classical around 1982 or KYTE-101.1 (now KUFO) around 1985 when they switched from AOR as KRCK to Classical as KYTE and then when KYTE switched to the AM Dial (970) in 1989.What other Classical stations where there? Any around Eugene-Springfield or Medford? Maybe years ago(1950's, 1960's, 1970's?) Thanks!

Only other one I can think of off the top of my head is 106.7 KKBK in Portland during the early 90s, after being Oldies (short period of time) and before they switched to Smooth Jazz in 1994 (that format lasted until 2002).
You might also want to try asking this over on PDXradio, if you haven't already.<P ID="signature">______________

KPAM/KPFM was pretty strong with the format prior to the mid 60s as were several other smaller outlets and emerging FMs. In addition some popular music stations ran certain Classical programs such as KOIN-FM, KXL-FM and KJIB.

When I lived in Portland KJIB 98.5 was running "Classical Omnibus" which was sponsored by "Fifth Avenue Records" and "Fred's Sound Of Music." They published a small program guide which was distributed there.

Then I recall KXL-FM 95.5 had a show called "Concert Hall" which was on Sunday nights at 11 p.m. hosted by John Lewis. (They used Tschaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Waltz as their theme...I still remember hearing his booming voice saying "Concert Hall. I'm John Lewis welcoming you to the wonderful world of classical music in KXL Stereo."

I believe that KOIN-FM 101 ran beautiful music during the day and their classical music show at 8 p.m. with a slogan such as "Good Music During The Day, Great Music At Night." There was a big stink when Gaylord Broadasting bought KOIN-AM and KOIN-FM and dumped the classical music programming. I believe their 8 p.m. classica l music show used Tschaikovsky's Serenade for Strings as its theme music. Later the entire KOIN music library went to KOAP-FM 91.5.

KINK 102 also had a classical music show on Sunday mornings with Les Sarnoff.

At some point I believe some station was running the syndicated "Doug Pledger With The Classics." It was pretty horrid.

That would have been KKEY 1150. You might have thought it was horrid, but my next door neighbor LOVED that station. Pledger was syndicated on tape from San Francisco, as I recall.

As for me, I was going to Duniway School with an earphone tuned into the Top 40 of the day...I thought the same way you did. :)

KKEY 1150 as I recall was a talk station with studios on N.W. Burnside near 23rd in downtown Portland who was affiliated with Mutual.

Before KKEY was Talk, it was the Cosmopolitan Sound and included various Doug Pledger programs. Much later, when KYTE-FM became Classical, they originally ran an automated format that appeared to include these same tapes. At least, it was the same voice.

That's where i heard Doug Pledger's show...

Actually more accurately, when KOIN-FM became KYTE-FM...

Nope. Shortly after KOIN-FM became KYTE-FM the format was switched to adult-leaning AC. Next was rock 40, AC/oldies, then AOR as KRCK. After all that, which happened in a span of about 10 years, came the flip from AOR to Classical and a return to the KYTE-FM call letters.

Eugene's KEED-FM 93.1 was classical around the late '50s and/or early'60s.

Now I'm confoozled...did KYTE-FM at one point go back to Classical for a spell after the switcharoos to the different formats? I left Portland in 1987.

KYTE-FM was only Classical once, which was between AOR as KRCK and the short-lived "City" format, just before becoming KUFO.

Duke Young told me once that KFMY's (97.9) original format in Eugene was classical pops, with some jazz programming in blocks. This would be mid-50's, when the station's transmitter was downtown.

As the first PD working for the station after it was bought from Duke by KUGN, I came to appreciate such a class act, very much of the old school.

I could be wrong on this but I dimly remember KERG 1280 in Eugene doing some classical in the late 1960's or very early 1970's.
