Hmmm...TADXing with in-car audio??? REI AM/FM radio products.

We all know how pretty much any AM/MW stations outside of North America operate on 9 kHz steps, meaning most in-car tuners can not hope to pick them up. One could order a head unit from Europe, but that could be pricey, by the time its shipped here (believe me, I've thought about it :D).

Today, I happened to stumble across a company US based company called REI (Radio Engineering Industries). They offer audio (& visual) equipment for buses, tractors, etc. One thing that caught my eye, is that their tuners offer US/Euro radio frequency modes...check out the catalogue and scroll down to page 15 ~> http://www.radioeng.com/post/sections/67/Files/REI_AV_Catalog_Final_ActiveTOC.pdf

The prices for their products appear to be very reasonable. For example, here's one of their radios (in a 'fender mount' housing for tractors) priced for a $169 ~> http://www.amazon.com/REI-Fender-Mo..._pw_dp?ie=UTF8&m=AF8EGQ3KRZQB6#productDetails

Cheap Chinese junk, or do these radios perform well? Has anyone heard of these folks and the quality/capability of their products?

I have no idea what the specs are on that, it may be a terrible unit to DX with or it could be great.

I looked to see if I could fined European stereos on eBay that would ship to North America and found the seller wheelsnbitsltd based out of the UK selling a few units for under $100 including shipping to the US. I imagine the price to Canada isn't that much different.

The Pioneer MVH-150UI for around $70 US + $20 shipping with the same specs as the DSP Supertuner 3D radios they make in the US (9dBf FM, 25uV AM).

I own a 2012 model Pioneer DSP Supertuner 3D car stereo and the performance is pretty good unless you are close to a tower then it seems to lower the gain like other DSP radios do.

Or the Sony CDX-GT260MP for around $84 US + $23 shipping (8dBf FM, 26uV AM)

The only problem is these units probably aren't switchable between US and Europe. Its a shame since the DSP within them is likely compatible, its just disabled in the software. These units also have the LW band according to the specs.

I believe that SOME aftermarket radios are designed to be sold worldwide and can be switched from 0.2 MHz/10 kHz tuning to 0.1MHz/9 kHz.

I've also heard that some factory units can be changed by clipping an internal diode.
