Mr. Bower was a World War II veteran, having served as a gunner stationed in England.
A few years back on Remembrance Day the Leafs had a home game and brought him out with the color guard for the anthems. He was dressed in his Leafs jersey and World War II gunners helmet. The crowd went wild!
He spent more than half of his career in the minor leagues (the six-team NHL was extremely difficult to crack back then). He and the late Terry Sawchuck split time during the Leafs' last cup-winning season in 1967.
I became a hockey fan in 1967-68 when the Bruins got good and remember Bower still playing for the Leafs then. He was a backup for Bruce Gamble that season. I believe Gamble was the last NHL goalie not to wear a mask.

According to Hockeywriters.com that would have been Gump Worsley. Easily the most loved goalie in NHL history by his teams he finally retired at age 41 stating "my face is my mask".

Last NHL goalie to not wear a mask was Andy Brown with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1974.
He jumped to the WHA the following year and played three more seasons with Indianapolis.
Bruce Gamble was traded by the Leafs to the Philadelphia Flyers for Bernie Parent in 1970.
Things did not go well for him in Philadelphia. He would lose the starting job to Doug Favell,
who ironically enough would end up with the Leafs four years later.
After a brief stint in the WHA Bernie Parent rejoined the Flyers just in time to make their
epic 2-cup run.
As a Chicago Blackhawks fan I always admired Johnny Bower. In 1962 & 65 "the Leafs" won the cup defeating the Hawks. I didn't like it at the time, but I always appreciated his ability, whenever I liked it or not.
