Hog Sports Radio moves tower and adds a contmeporary Christain Station.

Hog Sports radio will move closer into Springdale and 105.3 will become The Voice, which is going to be Contempoary Christian music. This according to a facebook message from the GM.

Seems like the Bunyard group in NWA is trying to become players. Classic Hits is definitely here to stay and putting on a Christian Station is very smart for them, they might quietly be on to something with that group of stations.

A good move on their part. As much of a following KLRC has, NWA could support a commercial contempory Christian. I am glad to see 99.5 move in closer to the I-540 corridor...looks like they will have a coverage pattern similar to 104.9 The X. I live in NW Fayetteville where 105.3 comes in loud and clear, but 99.5 doesn't come in for most indoor home radios. Anybody know when 99.5 will broadcast from the new tower? I hope it is in time for football season.

There are on 1340 out of Bethal Heights

The frequency and transmitter location of makes me think of the late KBRS-AM 1340. They were one of the few "Springdale" stations during the 70s and 80s. 1340 was silent in NWA for some 20+ years.

I hope this tower move doesn't make my reception of Classic Country KBTN 99.7 from Neosho, MO even more difficult than it already is. 99.5 has a tendency to blur it out on cheap radios around here (southern Barry co. MO) already. Also, this has got to be bad news for KGVE 99.3 in Grove, OK as well in terms of coverage.

The market share that KLRC has dominated with for so many years will make it very hard to compete for "The Voice" for a little while. It may be harder than they think - but they have some sales people that are passionate for the format, and when you have that, it can help.

Wonder what will happen with the new 96.7?

KLRC had at least one commercial competitor in the past, and it didn't last long. While there's certainly a high market share for CCM in Northwest Arkansas (and it's almost all 25-54 women), contemporary Christian has always been tougher to make money with than meets the eye. Maybe The Voice can make inroads if Magic continues to decline. However, it's still going to have to turn down those casino ads, which has likely been a barrier to some of the other operators in the market.

Kent, wasn't that competitor on 99.5 back in the 90's? I think I remember that but I don't remember what they called themselves. Or, are you referring to some other competitor that I might not know about?

Correct. That would be KREB "B-99." It ran the Morningstar CCM format and lasted about a year. From what I understand, it flipped in the summer of '94, and it was "99.5 Cool FM" by the following summer. I'm not sure exactly when it flipped as I didn't get back to Fayetteville until January '95, but I remember it being B-99 at least the first few months of '95.

I recall 99.5 debuting as a rock/country hybrid around or just before '94 and perhaps lasting into first part of '95. I want to say it was called "99.5 The Rebel". I also remember them being sports in the summer of '96. Those "B-99" and "99.5 Cool FM" phases must not have have lasted long. I'm not saying your wrong, but I just don't remember them.

By the time I transferred to Arkansas from Memphis State (January '94), 99.5 was "The Rebel." It was voicetracked by Power 105.7 jocks and seemed to have lots of automation problems. I'm not sure exactly when it signed on, but I know it was "B-99" a year later when I got back from Little Rock. The bumper stickers had "B-99" in red with a slightly transparent blue outline. They looked a little like the bumper stickers for KXOJ in Tulsa.

I also remember them being sports in the summer of '96. Those "B-99" and "99.5 Cool FM" phases must not have have lasted long. I'm not saying your wrong, but I just don't remember them.

The sports format launched in the late summer or early fall of '97. In August '95, when I was on my way back to school after spending most of the summer in Oklahoma City, I tuned to 99.5 expecting to hear CCM and found oldies. I also found country on 98.3 when I was expecting to hear CHR.

Sometime in '96 (I want to say September, but don't hold me to that), "99.5 Cool FM" added The Fabulous Sports Babe in middays and started loading up on special sports programming, like high school sports. I think it had Springdale High and the Dallas Cowboys. They knew most of 99.5's audience was going to be in Springdale from the get-go. It ran ABC/SMN's Pure Gold when it did oldies outside of morning drive. Morning drive was done by Dan Hentschel. Jay Fox off the network did the part of the midday shift between Hentschel and The Sports Babe, and it picked up with Ron Foster (ABC/SMN) in afternoons. I'm not sure about the rest of the Pure Gold lineup.

Power Radio Group/Hochman started outsourcing some of its overflow programming to KAMO AM/FM in late '95 and bought the stations outright in '97. Shortly afterward, the oldies format went to 94.3, and 99.5 (and the translator at 96.7) went to all sports.

Great memory Kent. I agree with much of what you recall. I'm positive 99.5 was doing at least some national sports programming in 1996. It was a midday weekday that I remember this, so it probably was The Fabulous Sports Babe, which aired in that time slot.

I remember all that. I've lived near the SW MO/ NW AR border almost all my life. I miss The Rebel. That station was truely one of a kind! Remember Mr. Moby?

The first shoe in this move is about to drop. To replace 99.5 at Huntsville, KGSF is supposed to relicense from Green Forest to Huntsville, and KTHS 1480 is supposed to move from Berryville to Green Forest. KGSF filed for its license to cover at Huntsville in the last couple days.

I grew up in Texas and Oklahoma, and I remember Moby when he was mornings at 97.1 KEGL before Kraddick took over!

And, yes, I remember he was on the Rebel in mornings, too. It was actually hard to tell it was same guy who did mornings on KEGL in the early to mid-80's. I'm thinking he was actually the first morning guy after KFJZ-FM became KEGL, but don't hold me to that. He went to Houston a few years later and eventually went country in Atlanta.

I always wondered if the Rebel and "Soft Rock Z-98.3" might have been able to work if they were launched a few years later. Just a couple years later, it would've been able to get all their music on hard drive, and the automation would've worked a ton better. It's really no wonder 99.5 went to satellite programming after having all that trouble with The Rebel.

I also thought the music mix on "Soft Rock Z-98.3" was way better than Magic 107.9's, and it sounded better as a CHR than Power 105.7. It was really a shame Demaree never gave 98.3 much of a chance with anything between oldies and country.

Kent, Billy Hayes was the 1st morning guy on KEGL and Moby came later. I want to say that Stevens and Pruitt were in there before Moby, but not sure.
