Holly Levis on WALK announces death of fellow personality JD Howard.

Practically in tears this afternoon Holly Levis announced the death of long-time WALK and Long Island DJ JD Howard. My condolences to his family, his colleagues at WALK and other friends from other stations around the Island, and of course anyone on this message board who knew Howard.

JD was a nice man, spent many shifts up in Melville, him on B103, me on 94.3. He was a very funny guy, and loved to be on the air! He will be missed! Rest in Peace JD! :'(

JD Howard a/k/a Dave Shnayer was a nice guy. He passed last night around 11pm.

I worked with him at B103 before he went to WALK-FM. Worked on his computers a few times when they would get screwed up - he lived a few blocks away with his lovely wife and his son who is off in college. The news hit me hard today as I saw him just about two months ago at the local drug store. He was looking good (for someone who had battled cancer and was still standing) and he said he was back at work, both at WALK and his real job. He was my age or within a year or two - I guess that makes it sting more.

I consider myself lucky to have known J.D. for his whole tenure at WALK 97.5. When I first started out as an intern and then graduated into working in the promotions department, he was the first jock that I had the opportunity to work with at a remote broadcast. I will always remember that day at Captree boat basin in the Summer of 1990. Over the next few years, we'd always have wonderful conversations about his early days in radio and his passion for it helped fuel my desire to make radio my career. Who would have thought that 18 years later, J.D. would be working for me at the same station? J.D. was an incredible announcer...great pipes, a smooth delivery and very relatable to the listeners. He was the type of part timer you could always count on to help you in a pinch...traveling into the station in hurricanes, snowstorms and giving 110 percent in any situation. He's been married to his wife Luann for 25 years plus and his son Josh was the apple of his eye. He left WALK for a short time in the 90's to do weekends at B-103, but after I took over as PD, I met him for lunch and invited him to come back. We've been lucky to have him as part of our family. Radio is a family...we all bond together in times of need. Today we all need to celebrate J.D., and his contributions of entertainment and excellence in his craft. Heaven just picked up another all star talent. Rest in peace, J.D. Your WALK family will miss you dearly.

Very tragic news indeed. I am shocked.

From the WALK website

It is our greatest sadness to let you know that one of our own, JD Howard, has lost his four year battle with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

You have heard JD Howard on WALK 97.5 for more than 15 years. JD will always be remembered in our hearts for being an incredible human being...a devoted husband, a loving father and a friend you could always count on. His passion was being a broadcaster and he loved bringing smiles and information to Long Islanders every Saturday afternoon between 9 am and 2 pm. Throughout his courageous fight with his illness, JD continued spending his Saturday afternoons on WALK. It brought him great joy and allowed him to escape for a few hours. We would like to send you the most sincere thank you from the entire WALK family for allowing JD to be a small part of your lives every weekend. It meant a lot to him and we are forever grateful.

Very shocked about the passing of JD.We talked about a month ago and he said he was feeling great and thought he had beat the cancer.JD was a true professional, great jock who loved being on the air.A man who loved his family and was one of the nicest guys you would ever want to work with or know.I will cherish the time together at B103.We would share great stories of our early days in radio, being that our first job was on the same station..WTNL in Reidsville Georgia. My prayers go out to his family. He will be missed.

I remember when I started at WALK in 1994 as somewhat of a radio "newbie". I heard JD on the air and thought to myself, "I'd better step up my game if thats the quality of the air talent here!" I followed JD on the air many a weekend at WALK... and always enjoyed our chats about "the biz". I also remember being amazed hearing him on the air while he was ill and thinking how amazing it was that the man didn't miss a beat. Long Island, the radio business, and WALK 97.5 has lost a real professional. The Shnayer family has lost a great father and husband. My thoughts and prayers are with you. If there really is a Rock and Roll heaven...with a radio station, they've just found their new morning star! Godspeed, JD.

JD was truly a great guy. I remember when he came to WALK while I was there in 1190, and he was such a pleasure to work with. Class act, great sound.

My prayers go out to JD's family in this difficult time.

I was deeply saddened to read of Dave's passing on All Access. Dave started his radio career at WQMC (Queens College radio). His next stop was WTNL/Reidsville, Georgia. He was so anxious to get out of Reidsville, he barely shook his replacement's (my husband) hand, so he could hop in his car & gun it back to NY. Word is he made it back in something like 20 hours, barely taking breaks.

Dave adored his son. I spoke to him many years ago and asked him what the story was with his air name (having gone to college with him, I only knew him by his real name). He told me the J was for his son Josh.

My deepest sympathy to his family.

I would also like to send my condolences to JD and his family.

I worked weekends at WALK with JD in the late 80's and early 90's. He
was a great guy, professional in every way and fun to talk with be it life,
guy talk or sports. He often spoke about his family and his love for them

One of the true good guys in the business.

I don't think there's anything I can add to what's already been said about JD. Easily one of the nicest guys around, and he was always a pleasure to work with. My heart goes out to his family.

One of the telling signs of the love and respect for JD/David was that the ceremony at the funeral home overflowed with well-wishers from both the main and side doors of the chapel into in the halls.
