Honolulu FM stations heard from the northwestern part of the big island

We took a trip to Waimea and then a little south of there in the direction of Kona today and we were high enough in elevation to easily hear FM stations from Honolulu.

We were above 3,000 feet and I was tuning around to find some music and there was a local traffic report from Honolulu.

So I took the video camera out and tuned around while my brother was driving and got this station with an ID.

It was coming in like a local too for a while until we went far enough inland and the mountains blocked the signal.

Good catch! I remember that many of the Honolulu FMs were clear on Kauai. In addition, there are many parts of Oahu in which the Maui stations blast in. I have never, unfortunately, heard a Big Island FM on Oahu.
 
FM in Hawaii was in it's infancy when lived there as a teenager in the mid-60s. There were only two or three FM stations in Honolulu. Half of the band was reserved for military use, IIRC, and I didn't even have an FM radio.

However what we did have in our second floor apartment in the Ala Moana neighborhood (just west of Waikiki) was a Sears 19-inch black and white portable with only rabbit ears. That was all that was required to produce a viewable picture on the Maui Channels (I want to say 3,7, & 12...but I'm not completely sure). During my trip to the Kona coast, I remember that the TV came over the air from Maui....with a picture inferior to what was available from the Maui channels in Honolulu.
 
That's quite the reception. I remember listening to KPOI (98 Rock on 97.5) on the west side of Maui in 1992. 98 Rock didn't make it to Hana (nor did any of the Honolulu FM's).

I was surprised KPOI and 98.5 (then running Z Rock) made the jump to Maui given their low HAAT's back then.

Your AM Bandscan was quite interesting as well.
 
That's a nice haul from the Big Island. About 170 miles from your spot to Honolulu.
The real challenge now is getting a Kauai FM. 96.9 KFMN would be a good pick to try for. Lihue to the Big Island is about 300 miles.

Cyberdad, Ch 3 was KGMV // KGMB. Ch 7 was KAII // KHON, and Ch 12 was KMAU // KITV. Much later, in 1989 a ch 16 UHF came on in Maui, // KHNL (which was Fox at the time). KHET has always had a network of translators throughout the islands for PBS.
 
Next time I'm over there, I'll be more prepared and bring a list of stations to look for.

FM from Kauai would be great.

And the western part of the big island reminds me so much of northern California with the grassy rolling hills and abundance of eucalyptus.

The town of Waimea has a climate that's cool all year round just like many places along the California coast.
