i can see how you might like the horrible ClearChannel-esque ID spots. the reggae selection that Bovine Ska, 96.5, 101.3, 105.3 and 102.9 thoroughly wreck on a daily basis, the putrid wahtevertheheck is on now, the annoying-as-all-hell Acapella, the absolutely nauseating techno at night

but we're getting off topic. i mean "go green" by not listening to JAMN 87.7, er i mean.. Hot97 (off by 10? who cares!) until they lower their power to 100 watts and raise their antenna to 250 feet...

Wow I forgot about WERS . 88.9 at night (Weeknight Rap show ) is hot and the secret spot ( weekend R&B show ) is Hot . My bad,The Boston area does have one good legal music radio station.

I know it's illegal and I don't condone the operation of illegal pirate stations, but maybe someday 87.7 will get enough money and listener following to make it legal. It's nice to hear true hip-hop, R&B, and old school on the radio. I especially love the old school music they play on 87.7 FM. Jam'n 94.5 is the Radio Disney of hip-hop and R&B stations, they cater to the young and wealthier suburban audience, which has great buying power, which is why they do so well playing so much pop music. 87.7 would most likely target the urban audience in Boston and other cities in the listening area, but I am sure there are some true urban music fans in the wealthier surburban areas that would tune in. Towns like Weston, Massachusetts, the wealthiest town in the state and located close to Boston, should be considered a gold mine to any Boston station.

As of right now,87.7 is not an FM Channel. It was the audio carrier frequency of TV Ch.6 using the old analog NTSC system. Digital TV CH.6 has digital info only. WPOT will always be a pirate. Right now it is not interfering with anyone.

Actually the two old analog channel 6 stations in New Bedford and Portland changed frequencies. If there were full power digital signals on 87.5 there would be no way an analog signal would survive.

I was driving through Boston today and was not impressed by the power of 87.7 WPOT. I came from Rhode Island on Route 95. 87.7 is not clear until you get to and within the Route 128/Route 93/Route 1 beltway around Boston. In the Route 93 tunnel downtown, 87.7 WPOT has no signal at all. In the downtown area I also heard pirates galore, 96.5 (Caribbean), 101.3 (Hip-hop), 102.1 (French, maybe Haitian), 103.7 (bad reception, sounded Carribean), 105.3 (Caribbean), 106.1 (Hip-hop, R&B). I was thinking 87.7 would reach a lot further than it did, but it seems it's mainly an urban Boston signal.

87.7 is very weak to the South due to Great Blue hill, and you were driving in South. If you continued North, you would have been able to pick them up under good conditions for at least 30 minutes.

Clear as a bell in Waltham.

Most of the major (legitimate) Boston stations are "wired" into the tunnels. That's why you can listen to them in there.

If they weren't, you might get WERS/WHRB/WFNX from Financial Place which is practically right above the tunnel, and maybe some weak or choppy signals at best from the Pru stations, but they wouldn't come as well as they do with the wiring.

Why not call it "Other Financial Center"

Speaking of pir--er, undocumented broadcasters--check out the news item on radio-info's front page right now about the $10k fine given out to a former sheriff who says he can broadcast legally in "the republic of Texas".

>>Frank, who ran the Travis County Sheriff’s Office from 1972 to 1981, had operated illegally for two years and was easy to find. He had a radio tower in his backyard.

"What illegal radio station...you say there's a tower in my backyard? WHAT tower...?"

Better put the power down!

That's all you can do is tell them put the power down! What about the congested area like Brooklyn or Newark, NJ clogging the dial with pirates? What ever happened to the old fashined raids, oh wait...it only applies to suburban areas, huh?

I don't like how people are simply accepting that theres pirates clogging the dial in Boston, and they're here to stay. The FCC certainly has better things to do, like keep legitimate stations in order, but many of these stations are on frequencies that are not truly vacant, I.E boadcasting over distant stations or on the first adjacent to out of town stations.

This is illegal and it's not okay, shut 'em down, it's like saying it's okay to rob banks as long as you pay your taxes ::)
