HOT 97 plays too much Southern crap (Hot 93.7/Hartford an alternative)

HOT 97 plays too much Southern crap. I guess the PD (Ebro Darden) must have fell and bumped his head and thinks this is Atlanta.

The only New York based artists that are played in regular rotation are the ones on the national R&B playlist (Jay Z,Ron Browz,Jim Jones,Busta). What happened to breaking new New York artists? That's what Hot 97 was known for back in the day.

Hot 107.9/Atlanta not only plays music from Billboard's Top 15 R&B Chart, but also a lot of Atlanta area artists not played anywhere but Atlanta and Southern areas.

K104/Dallas plays a lot of Dallas/Fort Worth area music (along with the Top 10 Beyonce/Keyshia Cole/Jamie Fox garbage).

People living in Fairfield and New Haven Counties in Connecticut can pick up Hot 97 and Hot 93.7/Hartford. Hot 93.7 plays a lot more New York based music than New York City's own Hot 97.

Can't believe Emmis has so many bad stations on in New York City (98.7 KISS is an above average station).

Ludacris is from Atlanta and is Southern. Hope your not saying he is crap. Plus NBC just had him perform lastnight on Carson Daily's New Year Eve.

Hot 93.7 always manages to impress me. Maybe it's just my taste as a hiphop listener, but it always seems like they do their thing pretty well and I always tune in whenever I'm driving through New England.

Hot 97 and Flex is ON FIRE tonight.

Soundling like the ORIGINAL HOT 97 (Dance)now.

Flex Shouting out Tony Humfries (sp)

Hmmmmmm.......makes me wonder if Hot 97 is "testing the waters" for a certain frequency 4.8 mHz north on the dial. It's definitely something to consider here!

Testing the waters doesn't mean it's a good idea or that it will happen, in my opinion. I'm not even sure that's what's going on in the minds of people there.

I don't think so

It would eat into Hot97 too much.

Unless that music is stripped from Hot97 100%

Not necessarily.

The Hot 97 crowd into hip-hop won't go for dance, per se, if 101.9 went that way. Depends on how it's marketed. If a 101.9 sounds anything like a Pulse 87, it would be outer borough, mainly Italians/Puerto Ricans. If 101.9 leaned more house/underground on the afrocentric (that probably won't be the case but it would be a different market), then I could see a bit of an effect, but not much. At the same time you also add in a new audience that was never into the Pulse 87 brand of dance, and another crowd to consider.........Asians. Asians are BIG into the house/underground scene.

Tony..As an Asian myself...I'd say that part of your analysis is correct. OLDER Asians (25+) are into the House/Underground scene. However, the younger Asian demos are predominantly Hip-Hop. Many Asians think House music is their parents music. I used to DJ in the Asian club scene in NY. The Asian scene went from House in the 90s to now predominantly Hip-Hop/Mashup/Top 40/dance. Just because you see a group of Asians dancing together in a circle at Pacha at 5am Sunday morning doesn't mean All Asians are BIG in the house/underground scene. ;)

Funny you mention Pacha since I did catch that 5AM Sunday circle a couple of months ago! :D

Yet still, I couldn't help to notice. I've also noticed Asians in the "lounges" (such as Sin Sin) on the East Village as well. But during Beatstock (which is mainly big on freestyle but did have the dance acts), I found very few (not counting the person I was hanging with backstage at PNC). But looking at hip-hop venues, you are right. And somehow (actually meaning EVERY culture under 25) that's the people we have to get at somehow. And it seems from the hip-hop side (based on recent "friends" entering the coalition), they WANT to embrace dance somehow.

Things seem to be changing. How it will all play out is anyone's guess.

Don't get me wrong, even Hip-hop is getting up-tempo again. I'm just happy to play songs at 120 BPM + again. ;)

And that's a good thing, right? :D

I see hip-hop making some sort of transition to its "rhythmic roots". Honestly, I'd love for the hip-house style to come back! The other day I had downloaded Tune Brothers feat. Tyree Cooper "Make Your Body Pop", the TV Rock & Luke Chable Remix, and it was wicked! Always great seeing a Chicago hip-house legend coming back with today's sound.

Yea it's a good thing. ;) and yea..Hip-house is back too.

I see a lot of young Asians when I go to the SOUL SUMMIT Soulful House Parties (July/August) at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn every Summer.

I also see a ton of young Asians at the Soulful House music parties during the Winter Music Conference/South Beach every March. They love DJ's like Dennis Ferrer & teen DJs The Martinez Brothers.

Also, people are getting into the few Rap songs with House beats (Day & Night-Kid Cudi).
