"House Hunters" looks scripted. And Suzanne's hair looks all Whang lately.

My mother is an avid watcher of HGTV's "House Hunters". The show looks to me (and her) like scripted reenactments of actual house seekings. Is that true of HH?

And IMO HH's hostess, Suzanne Whang, looked better back when she had bangs.

All those HGTV shows are scripted up the wazoo and they try not to look it.

Laugh if you will but my wife and I didn't just watch; we studied "Designed to Sell" and "Sell This House" before putting our house on the market a year ago.

Did only those things that those shows suggested boosted value; avoided a ton of "traps". Actually got about 30% more for the house than we had thought possible and turned the sale in a month when typical time-on-market was up around five months.

Yeah, they're scripted but scripted by people who know what they're doing!

I'll have to admit my wife and I have picked up ideas for making improvements to our house from various home improvement shows, although we haven't gone to the extreme of Flip This House (one of my favorites) yet. ;D

Yes, it is scripted. They re-enact the phone calls and visits to the homes.
My wife loves the show. Aside from seeing different homes, I can't see how this got green-lighted to be a show. It's just weird to me.

I really like HH even if it is scripted!!! You always know they are going to choose the third house which was always the case in the past... I like watching those South Carolina boys on Real Deal on TLC... Although it is scripted it is fun to watch and really gives you more of a realistic view of "flipping"... Back to house hunters they should make the show an hour long show where you go through the whole process from loan approval to the final closing... This would give first time buyers a more realistic look at what goes on when buying your first house... JMO CC1

A caution:

Great place to get ideas for improving a house you intended to live in.

Dangerous to think there's a fast buck to be made in flipping houses.

I've done it several times though not in recent years. Lesson I learned that the first house and, to a lesser degree, the second, is going to lose you some money. Oddly, if you're young enough and you don't let it get completely out of hand, that's a good thing. Once you've made your mistakes...please, make 'em on houses you bought really cheap and invested more in labor than in material...you'll be able to spot good properties and understand what to do and how to do it in order to turn a profit.

If you're willing to accept at least one setback, flipping houses can be very rewarding. Other big "IF" is "if" you understand the market trend. Hard to get the hang of it but the trick is simply to buy just before the market bottoms out while there are still houses that are fixable and don't rush to get the job done. If you do, it'll be lousy workmanship and you'll be going to market prematurely...before the upturn has gathered speed.

First "flipper" I bought cost me $4,500. Put in another $11,000 in materials and sold for $18,500. Sounds like a profit if you don't count the hours and hours of work. The things I learned in the process would have cost $20,000 and two years in a trade school!

In watching that kind of show pay more attention to what they do wrong than what turns out perfectly and you'll get a wonderful free education.

As others have said, it is completely scripted. I had some friends that were the buyers on an episode and their show was recorded a full year after they actually bought their house and not one the houses that they looked at on the show was actually for sale.
