I'll have to admit my wife and I have picked up ideas for making improvements to our house from various home improvement shows, although we haven't gone to the extreme of Flip This House (one of my favorites) yet. ;D
A caution:
Great place to get ideas for improving a house you intended to live in.
Dangerous to think there's a fast buck to be made in flipping houses.
I've done it several times though not in recent years. Lesson I learned that the first house and, to a lesser degree, the second, is going to lose you some money. Oddly, if you're young enough and you don't let it get completely out of hand, that's a good thing. Once you've made your mistakes...please, make 'em on houses you bought really cheap and invested more in labor than in material...you'll be able to spot good properties and understand what to do and how to do it in order to turn a profit.
If you're willing to accept at least one setback, flipping houses can be very rewarding. Other big "IF" is "if" you understand the market trend. Hard to get the hang of it but the trick is simply to buy just before the market bottoms out while there are still houses that are fixable and don't rush to get the job done. If you do, it'll be lousy workmanship and you'll be going to market prematurely...before the upturn has gathered speed.
First "flipper" I bought cost me $4,500. Put in another $11,000 in materials and sold for $18,500. Sounds like a profit if you don't count the hours and hours of work. The things I learned in the process would have cost $20,000 and two years in a trade school!
In watching that kind of show pay more attention to what they do
wrong than what turns out perfectly and you'll get a wonderful free education.
