House of Hair back on in West TN

I've read several comments inquiring about the House of Hair show. It is now on SL100 WASL every Saturday night starting at 9. (end of plug)

Shameless! (but probably effective)
Not near the coverage...but the "Hair" fans can maybe drive closer to Dyersburg to hear.

I love the House of Hair, you have a new listener to your station on Saturday Nights. Sorry Rock 92.3, several people wanted it back and it fell on deaf ears.

I'm happy that you're happy Sandy! ;)

Booker T,

Thanks for adding nothing to the conversation, it is appreciated. Some of us grew up with that type of music and there is a very devoted fan base. My kids love the hair bands but despise 70's classic rock unless it is AC/DC,Black Sabbath, or Alice Cooper. I don't think asking for two hours a week of hair bands is asking too much. I never stopped listening to it and I also watch Metal Mania all of the time on VH1-Classic.

"If it ain't metal, its crap!"

We had received a number of emails and calls asking us to air the House of Hair on SL100. I had no idea that the fan base for the show was that big in this area. I know that 80's hair metal isn't for everyone, but that's why our positioner is "Real Rock Variety". And Meepster - the coverage isn't that much of a drop off from WYNU. We are 50,000 watts and cover over 30 counties and parts of 4 states. (end of another shameless plug)

Shameless plug so noted.

I know 50,000. Maxie worked on that for a long time.
My point is...have you tuned in 100.1 in and around Jackson?
You hit the by-pass anywhere south of North Parkway, the fading begins.
That was my experience when I checked this out just the other day.

I ain't hatin' bro!
Picking up whatever listeners you can (1 I know of for sure, there) by running a program your competition dropped makes logical sense. It's much the same as hiring a personality recently canned (yet unprotected by a non-compete) from your competition and putting them on the same air shift.

That way you can score at least some of their listeners-at least some of the time-with very little, if any, real effort. When this is done, you may gain some credibility with some listeners.

I'm not saying it's a parasitic relationship...it's more of a scavenger scenario.

The scraps may not be up to the competition's standards, but after they've eaten all they care to from the kill; there's still food left. Why just let it lay there?
If there's a market for "House Of Hair" that WYNU doesn't appreciate or need...a station trying to build an audience the same particular market, may very well be wise to do it.

You just have to hope that you gain more "House of Hair" lovers than you lose "House of Hair" haters in that time frame.

That said, I really kind of feel SL-100 is missing the boat on a lot of potential listeners and advertising revenue up and down Highway 51. There is only one FM station located between Dyersburg and Memphis, and the population in the past 10 years in that same area has EXPLODED!

Bill Thomas is all over that idea with his LMA WKBQ FM in Covington. He's playing country.

Anyway...what do I know. I've only been on the Giant Slaying end of radio once- back in the day when a small 3,000 watt station called "HitRadio Q-102" went up against "The New 92 FM, WYNU", a 100,000 watt blowtorch in Jackson, TN and beat them in Jackson rather handily and consistantly for a while there.
Granted, the multi-county numbers never looked great real far out of Jackson-for obvious reasons.
Neither of us could do much damage to "SuperWolf" and 96.

Do you still have your shiney, yellow, satin jacket?

But radio was sure a hoot back then.
I was in my way early 20's, and could have a little attitude at times then. ;D

(End of another meaningless rant)

The House of Hair was on WYNU for four or five years and from what I am told always did well. I know I used to have a housefull come over and listen to the show with me and I had three or four last Sat that never listen to SL100 regularly. I don't think two hours a week is too much to ask, it's nice hearing songs that aren't played five hundred times a day on terrestrial radio.

My post basically states that it was probably a good idea for SL-100 to put it on.

It certainly won't hurt them as they tweak their format and go for a different audience.
Another thought is that "House of Hair" may really be for an audience that is a little narrow for a station that covers so much area as WYNU.

Although no station can ever please all the people all the time, when you are dealing with that kind of coverage, it becomes more important to try.
"Just a couple hours" can be an eternity if a prospective listener hates what is on.
Heck...30 seconds can be too long.

In many cases, that first impression is all you really get.

Programmers know this.
Greg knows this...and Roger knows this.
They happen to be two different perspectives.

For WYNU, perhaps it's not worth it to chance losing listeners who came and stayed for something else...While for SL-100, in trying to make a move into a particular audience and market, it is worthwhile to do this and/or anything else you can to not only get new listeners, but to actually have an opportunity to take some from another station.

But that's just a guess on my part.

BTW, I liked "House of Hair" the times I heard it on WYNU.
Dee has cracked me up since back in the day. :)

Adding nothing to the conversation is what I do best.

I can't pick up SL100 where I live, but when I heard the HoH was back, I drove to a friend's house this past weekend just to hear the show. It has become a new tradition to visit her every Saturday night for a few hours and then turn on the radio. I love the hair bands, thank you Mr.Vestal for listening to the fans.

That highway 51 corridor is the future I-69 corridor! But that could be years away. I certainly did not know that Covington was the only town between Dyersburg and Memphis with an FM station. Didn't Ripley have one at one time?

I remember when "Dyersburg 100" changed to "100.1 FM" and adopted an AC format that was really too soft for its time (mid to late '80s) and for such a small (for that time anyway) market. Then, in their first incarnation as "SL100," they played about a 50/50 mix of country and hot AC. What they played at the time was definitely country, but I suppose they thought it had "crossover" potential. Interesting mix of music about that time.

The irony here is that "100.1 FM" wouldn't have dared touch those heavy metal bands!

Roger, can you name those 30+ counties that you are reaching? It would be interesting to see if residents of those far outlying counties can pick you up! I know you can name the four states, that's too easy! But what about all the counties in those four states? 8) ;D ;)

Some folks ask for a program on this board...WYNU passes...SL100 picks it up.

Interesting rivalry.

Pedro

There is an FM licensed in Ripley, but Walt Williams sold it for an outrageous price a few years back.
It is 94.5, (I think) and it is now K-LOVE.

WYNU passed on "House OF Hair" after a lengthy run there....THEN people (okay...1 guy) came onto the board asking about it.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit if he could! I know for fact that he's that good with music details. Give him an artist or a title and he can tell you what year it was a hit (if it ever was), what position on the chart and probably the record label and licensor! It wouldn't surprise me at all if he not only knew all 30 counties but also new the population and the county seat! His recall is astounding! And I ain't blowing smoke. Ask anyone that's worked with him. ;)

Granted.

Obviously, there was still a demand for it and WASL decided to supply it.

John Boy and Billy move from WYNU to WASL.

Just interesting to see the back and forth.

Wasn't trying to trip him up or anything like that. I wanted to see if I could pick up SL-100 the next time I am in some of those outlying counties in their coverage area. Too often, when drawing maps of a station's coverage area, they will simply put a compass on their transmitter site, and draw a circle around everything within an X-mile radius of that transmitter site. And just because one site X-miles from a transmitter site can receive a given station, doesn't mean that another site also X-miles from that transmitter site can also pick up that station. The station's wattage is usually taken into consideration, but the tower's height, and the terrain of the surrounding area often is not.
