Houston Astros Spanish Broadcasts Move to La Ranchera 101.7FM and 850AM

Great news for Astros fans who enjoy listening to the Spanish-Language broadcast with Francisco Romero and former Astros' Catcher Alex Trevino, as the AM/FM simulcast reaches fans from Victoria, TX to Lafayette, LA.

LBI MEDIA Regional Mexican-Spanish Sports KEYH-A/HOUSTON-KNTE/BAY CITY, TX (LA RANCHERA DEPORTES 850 AM Y 101.7 FM) has inked a multi-year agreement to serve as Spanish-language flagship for HOUSTON ASTROS baseball. FRANCISCO ROMERO and ALEX TREVINO will be back to call the games for the World Champions, with JOSE CRUZ also returning for frequent appearances. The ASTROS aired last year on what had been LATINO BROADCASTiNG CORP. Spanish Religion K231CN (LA NUEVA 94.1)/HOUSTON (now GOW MEDIA's Sports SPORTSMAP 94.1).

“Our partnership with LBI MEDIA is a big win for the ASTROS and for our many Spanish-speaking fans,” said ASTROS President of Business Operations REID RYAN. “Opening Day for the 2018 season is just around the corner and we are looking forward to hearing the ASTROS Spanish radio broadcast on its new AM and FM dials.”

“LBI MEDIA is excited to be the new home and partner of the World Champion HOUSTON ASTROS on Spanish radio,” said LBI COO WINTER HORTON. “All of the ASTROS action will be available to listeners on both AM and FM, ensuring Spanish speaking ASTROS fans of HOUSTON will hear every game all season long.”

In this case, do the Astros pay to be put on the air or does LBI pay for the rights? I can't imagine this being profitable for LBI. One thing is soccer, but baseball?

The Astros do not pay their radio affiliates to air their games.

Some MLB clubs have to pay stations to air their games because there would be zero interest otherwise (the Rangers, for example).

There are a number of teams that buy the actual game time and package radio with the other advertising platforms they offer, such as in-park displays, etc. Arrangements can differ, but sometimes the station is given some of the ad time to sell as part of the package.

In these cases, the team simply wants to retain control of the product. They even may hire the play by play announcers, with the station just providing the broadcast time.

David, in your past experience with Univision, are Spanish broadcasts of NFL, NBA, and MLB a profitable venture for stations? I remember KLAT used to carry the Rockets and Astros at one point.
