Houston-Galveston Arbitron Radio Ratings: February 2012

Huge eye-opener: KHMX is way up. Nice recovery for a station that was on the format bubble just a few months ago. Guess we can forget about sports on 96.5 for the time being.

The main three sports stations all down, probably due to the end of football season. KGOW still stinks...they are now below KGOL in cume. :p

Even those who never listen have to be impressed by KSBJ, presumably supported by a loyal audience that listens to nothing else. Assuming 96.9 becomes a simulcast, they could be knocking on the door of KODA.

99.1 is #1 I do not believe that I would say 102.1 should be #1

I can believe 99.1 being #1. They win in the office and many places of business as being the best choice on the dial.

102.1 has always been an exceptioonal station and when I look at the numbers, who wouldn't want to sell the combo of of KMHQ and KBXX. That's 13.1....incredible and VERY hard to ignore when advertising budgets are decided. I'd bet they can command their rates without a bunch of hassle. Plus, they are consistently in the top 5 each book.

Interesting to see where KUHA ended up. So many said it wouldn't show. But, that's a respectable nnumber for a niche format. I wonder if the KUHF HD-2 factored into that number, or if it did that all by its little analog self?

Anyone who heard KUHA's simulcast on KUHF HD2 would count towards 91.7. They're not listed separately.

The KUHA numbers, despite some wobble, have been decent. Management should be happy, although corporate underwriting and listener donations should be factored in as well.

They might get a nice bump once the 91.3 translator starts beaming into some of the high dollar neighborhoods in town.

And KUHA's numbers make it pretty clear what a dog KTRU was on the same signal.

so can anyone make a determination as to whether or not killing The Zone was a smart move? I'm seeing numbers all over the place and I'm just a mere listener here.

smart in their eyes, a waste in most of ours. The Zone had a chance to take away a nice chunk of The Buzz's listeners. The problem, as I see it, was their lack of direction for the station from jump. When it first flipped it sounded like a mix of The Point and KHJK. I guess that was tanking as within a month it went head to head with The Buzz. At that point, I think 106.9 would have been successful as it was pulling out songs that I hadn't heard on Houston's airwaves since The Buzz was at 107.5. It was never given a chance, so none of us will ever know what The Zone may have done in this market.

I am sure that what Cox is paying D&R for the morning show duties was a huge factor in the decision to simulcast the two sticks. I personally would have rather seen 97.1 revert back to simulcasting 107.5 as it once did and moved Country Legends to 106.9. It's just a waste to have 106.9 being relegated to a simulcast of any other station considering its huge signal footprint in the area.

Their combined cume and share has been greater than the sum of both sticks as independents before the simulcast.
That is a fact. There is no question of that. However, if the alternative format had been given time to develop, I think KHPT's numbers as "The Zone" would have increased to the point that its ratings and cume as a stand alone would have been higher than what both stations together in simulcast are pulling now. That, of course, is arguable as we will never know what The Zone's potential might have become.

Keep in mind, 106.9 was a stagnant 80's station that ran about 3 years past its prime. The frequency needed time for the average listener to realize that the same old Toto and Cars songs they played to death as The Point were no longer in the station's rotation. Cox didn't give The Zone anywhere near enough time to develop and find its place in the grand scheme of things, which is in my opinion is the shame of it all.

Agreed. The Zone was almost good enough for me to pull away from KHJK. Then those "Cox" pulled the plug on the station and now I am back with 103.7 FM. Oh well.
