Houston-Galveston Radio Ratings: February 2023

Covering the survey period from Thu. 2/2/203 thru Wed. 3/1/2023, age 6+ overall:

Top 5+ demo rankings analysis will be available via AllAccess.com on Tue. 3/21/2023.

The Eagle, The Spot, and KSBJ showing a lot of strength.

KILT-FM and KKBQ combining for a 9.4, so Country still doing well in the market.

Note that KKBX and KQBT combine for only a 6.0. Where has the audience gone? Streaming services?

Bit of a plop for Mix.

El Norte doing okay, but it appears that La Raza is running on fumes.

How does 97.5 keep going? Seems their spot load has shrunk lately. Loss leader for the rest of Gow Media?

Our favorite dumpster fire, KROI, manages to break above a 1.0. Still want Alfred to sell the station.

And Classical continues to have a pulse on an HD only subchannel.

Looks like KTSU got a small boost. I’m still hoping they will go HD and have an HD2 with The Vibe 24/7

I wonder how much the listening area of KNTE is included for Houston
The 60 dbu on that one only covers parts of Brazoria and Fort Bend counties. The rest is not in the Houston MSA.

It's been a while since KILT-FM and KKBQ combined for such a high share, the Country format definitely seems to be at a good point right now.

I'm assuming the panel imbalances that are affecting the ethnic targeted stations are what's causing the downturn for KBXX and KQBT, but streaming services are likely playing a role as well.

It seems like dropping most of the '90s they had been playing and ceding that space to KTBZ-FM seems to have helped KGLK. They're actually sounding pretty solid right now, I've been listening to them a bit more recently than I usually have.

Why would that be? Just curious, as the Norteña format seems to be a nice fit with the demographic origins of much of the local audience.
Demographics. Norteña is old.

I wonder if the Rodeo has something to do with that. I’m sure March will be much higher.

And I understand the 2000ft 97.5 tower south of Winnie is in poor shape. You would think that Gow would fix it since, if it falls, there goes 5 million investment!! I heard the last tower crew that went out there refused to go up it

This is the largest Country share in the market since November 2019. And country typically has its largest shares in February and March in Houston thanks to the buzz around Rodeo.

Could it be something of a paradox? The Eagle being successful in a younger-leaning market by barely playing anything after 1989?

Especially when most classic rock stations have delved well into the 90s, including fellow Cox station WBAB in Long Island. Hell, WBAB recently played Dani California by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and that came out in 2006!

In contrast, whilst playing plenty of gold, the Buzz is far more emo-friendly than, say, 99X in Atlanta. On 99X, you're more likely to hear the likes of Dave Matthews or the Talking Heads than the likes of Panic! At the Disco or Paramore.

Either different sampling within PPM, or Houston solidifying their affinity for Rock music when many other markets (NYC, Miami, Boston, etc) have cooled on it.

If the tower falls, does 92.5 still carry the imaginary HD2 source?
