Houston Oilers vs. Tampa Bay Bucs cassette tape

I need some help from the collective brain trust...

I'm going through a box of old cassette tapes I had forgotten that existed. On a green and white Kmart brand cassette tape(lol), I have recorded a game between the Oilers and Bucs that I am listening to right now. It's from the late 70s, maybe even 1980. The game features such names as Tim Campbell, Earl Campbell, Jesse Corker, Bum Phillips as coach, and Gifford Nielson was taken to the locker room with "an apparent seperated shoulder". This game was played at the Astrodome and your announcers are Ron Franklin and a very young sounding Craig Roberts. Tampa is up 21-7 in the 4th quarter. Ron Franklin just asked why coach McKay was wearing his hat indoors, which Roberts quipped back "McKay didn't have Bum's mom growing up!"

I don't remember recording this game, and I guess to save tape space, I cut out the commercials as well as any indication as to exactly when this game happened. Regret that one, some now 40 years later, lol.

Can anyone tell me the date when this game was played, and what FM station aired it? This was certainly recorded off of the FM dial.

It was 1980. Nielsen was injured in the first pre-season game against Tampa Bay on Monday Night Football August 11. Houston lost 21 to 7. I seriously doubt it was on an FM station. If I had to guess which station, I would pick either KTRH or KILT AM.

1980 Pre-Season Schedule and Results
Date Opponent Location Result

08/11/1980 (Mon) Tampa Bay -- L 21-7 --
08/17/1980 New Orleans -- W 20-17 --
08/23/1980 (Sat) @ Dallas -- L 20-13 --
08/28/1980 (Thu) Buffalo -- W 24-7 --

Much thanks, Filio. The reason I believe it was recorded off of the FM is because the tape's audio sounds very clear, for a 35 year old cassette, and appears to have come from a stereo broadcast. Could have been KILT. I would've lived in the Heights then where, of course, KILT has always had a strong presence, signal wise. It's a 90 minute tape, so apparently I did everything possible to fit the entire game on it, sans commercials or anything that indicative of station origination. I listened to almost the entire duration of the game, and never even heard the pause for station ID once. At least with the date, I can properly label it. Thanks again!

KILT and KTRH are both powerful signals that can be heard loud and clear many miles away. In those days, KTRH was lobed west, east and south. Not so much to the north. When I worked there in the late 70s we had listeners in Mexico and Central America. I did night time call-in, and I frequently had callers in the Canal Zone.

KTRH has not changed patterns in decades...the old tower site south of I 10 near Baytown and the current site south of US 90 west of Dayton have similar patterns and cover the same territory....(S-W) though it throws a little minor lobe over the BPT area.

KILT has always been on West Rd west of I45 (you can see the 4 towers from the North Freeway)...its signal goes due south (always has) like most of Houston's AMs..

I dont think any FMs had football on them back in 79 or 80 in Houston.....Someone like Chuck Tiller or Jim Pruett and Beau Weaver may remember
