How about an old school hip hop station on 105.1?

No number two in Cincy or Indy so far. Here maybe Alpha got wind of IHeart about to make a change at WLGX or WTFX and spun 105.1 again to try and get the jump on IHeart and protect their urbans? About repeats, seems a new station would want to be sure someone clicking in the first time would hear only the best songs at the start.
 
There definitely isn't room for two and I'm skeptical that there is even room for one. But I don't think anybody who would put a competitor on the air has an objective necessarily to have another station and say "look, we're beating you." They just want to deflate the air from their competitor and fragment their audience. Sort of like what they did in Lexington... Cumulus brought in Nash Icons and iHeartMedia brought in their own country music station on a translator. Cumulus and iHeartMedia are big on this, they've got more stations than they know what to do with and seem to think the solution is to saturate their markets with unnecessary imitators just to knock the originals down a bit.

I only suggested Radio Now since they've already got a rhythmic leaning top 40 format, and they could (at least in theory) start mixing these in without really disturbing a lot of listeners, even if it isn't a permanent or full-time change. Or they could do it as a weekend stunting thing, "Old School Weekends" (of course that could work for MyFM as well, but at MyFM, there is no point in changing the diapers only on the weekends when the whole week needs to be nuked).

But this isn't the same audience as Now. It's older. More AC than CHR. 25-54 as the PR from Alpha said. Maybe MY should diversify and add in the most popular classic hip hop to their regular music? Didn't you laugh like I did when those first ratings were so bad for Icons in Lexington?

Their Facebook page has probably ten times as many fans as GHL and Easy Rock did, and that isn't even considering that those were the same page (so really GHL was just carrying over Easy Rock's fans, but they started fresh with Old School). That isn't an all telling statistic, but it is definitely a sign that word is getting out about the station, and from my own personal everyday experience, people are actually acknowledging 105.1 exists for the first time since it was WLRS (and probably more acknowledgment now than there was then).

Particularly interesting about the comments, though (which are all positive except for this one guy named Darrell from Fairdale who unsurprisingly really, really hates the new format and is constantly there to remind everybody of that fact and that the "trashiness" of the station doesn't represent the "high class" and "wealthy" citizens of Shepherdsville), is that a lot of people are saying things like "bye B96" or "finally, I don't have to put up with B96 anymore." I wouldn't be surprised if 105.1 sees some of their best numbers ever with this format change, but I also can't help but to wonder how much this will hurt B96 and if that will force 105.1 into another change.
 
I sure do miss the easy rock format. I didn't care too much for Louisville's greatest hits but this new format is to say the least not for me. I'm shocked they can play some of this on the radio. Even censored its pretty raunchy.
 
I'm surprised they're still WGHL, but I guess there just weren't any other call letters available (Radio One has the most obvious one, WOSL, on their Old School Cincy). I wonder if they'll put on-air personalities on there this time. It is interesting to note that I found a job listing for a music director and afternoon personality for GHL that George Lindsey posted on All Access back around mid-November, so it looks like GHL was looking to actually put somebody on air at some point in time. Obviously, that never happened, though they could shift some personalities from B96/Magic 101.3 this time.

This is a bit unrelated, but speaking of All Access, it seems like DJX is actually looking for an afternoon personality to replace Jackson Blue.
 
Bring mike shannon back to djx. Always entertaining. One of my favorite rapster piece theatres was a few years ago with the musical smarts by major laser n bubble butt. Mr lindsey is so white lol Ya cant beat it a 50 something man rapping to funny. A fixture at the ole 102.3 frequency for quite some time

I wouldn't mind hearing Mike Shannon back on the radio, though I have to question if he'd be good for DJX... he seems more like 102.3 material these days. Is he even doing anything these days? In true radio form, he has been in both Atlanta and Toledo for very short stints since leaving DJX. I always sort of expected to hear him pop up on Gen-X Radio since he would have been perfect there, but that never happened either.
 
Seems like I heard him on 106.9 a couple of years back doing a Saturday night 80's party kind of thing. Or am I mixing him up with someone else? Whoever it was, they did a good job, phoners and everything. He made it sound like a party was going on.
 
Yes, he was briefly on 106.9 on Saturday nights for their all 80s Rewind Weekend (now just Rewind Saturday night, at the time they were running the 80s all weekend). He was pretty good there, but I think he was more or less there to keep something going on in his life since it wasn't long before he left to go to WSB-FM. I'm pretty sure he was at 106.9 for less than a year. Maybe Mike Shannon is what 100.5 needs... I might even endure that MY FM crap to listen to him.

New ratings come out for Louisville on Tuesday... I'm eager to see if the Alpha stations are in it this time or not. In case anybody missed it, Indianapolis numbers came out today and WRWM (the Cumulus-owned station that to old school hip hop as "The Beat") and they made a huge splash, going from 1.7 in December to 7.7 in January. In fact, if you disregard the low-rated religious, classical, and sports stations, WRWM went from last place to first place. That's huge. I don't expect WGHL to move up to first place, but I feel like they're going to be bigger than ever before (though I'm skeptical it will be lasting success).
 
It's strange that 105.1 hasn't changed call letters.Maybe they are keeping WGHL in case the Old School format doesn't work out down the road.Then they could go back to Classic Hits.I remember how long the Jammin' Oldies format had legs. WGHL could now mean "Greatest Hip Hop for Louisville" :)
