How Do High Power Directional AM Stations Survive In A Small Market?

Medium and High Power AM Directional Stations are going silent, downgrading, often to nondirectional Class Ds under 50 watts at Night, and being cancelled all over the country. So how are some 50000 watt AM stations in smaller markets surviving without changing? And even many 50000 watt stations in larger markets are downgrading facilities and selling their legacy facility land.
