How do stations know whether or not a "new" on air talent is unpopular/doesn't resonate with listeners?

While DJs who have been there for a while have generally a built in audience, how do they know what listeners think of newer hosts that they aren't fond of on a station they listen to? For example, I have seen some morning shows go away and replaced and other parts of the day, but is there any way they determine whether its just the music or if the hosts/shows resonate?
