How long will Neal Boortz`s stale show last on WSB-AM 750?

  • Start date

I remember I was "randomly selected" for a Cox survey on the Boortz show. It asked questions about whether or not Neal talked too much about aviation, the FairTax, Belinda, etc.

So, to Goat's point, someone is obviously focus-grouping the show, or at least doing some research as to listener turn-ons and turn-offs.

As an aside, I would imagine that the easily-offended aren't the show's core audience. That said, I fully expect someone to do a PPM study on what Neal talks about, minute (or 5 minutes) by minute...

As Neal said, he's just a deejay playing people on the air. And if someone sounds like the proverbial and obsolete broken record, off they go. Never mind if a topic tanks in a ballroom or other study.

Like everything else, it's all about the Benjamins.

The sad thing about it is that Neal does really have the ability to captivate the listener. However, these days it seldom happens. He was still pretty good in the 1990`s, but now has llost his edge. If Cox is doing focus questions on him and his show, they may be questioning whether to force him to make big changes.....

This post is very interesting to me because I just recently began thinking that something was off with the show. I've not been a regular listener to the Boortz show as I work in a contractor capacity and so there are times I don't listen for months and then I'll get a daily diet of him.

I listen to Boortz on the Jacksonville Fl affiliate station and I would think the political season has to be a bonanza in audience interest and participation for talk show hosts. But I must say, I now believe it was a waste of time and money for Neal and his team to travel to the two political conventions. There were certainly not a lot of guests and basically there was just a lot of nothing. Lost opportunity if you ask me. Rush never bothered going to the conventions and his shows were right-on. (Pardon the pun)

Still, the morning after the Sarah Palen/Charlie Gibson interview I really wanted to hear the reaction. And so I got a bunch of chores done early in the day and I literally made a bee-line to the radio at 9AM where the show starts where I live. The talk was a bunch of ramblings and then Neal announced he had not seen the interview but had the transcript. He was curuous what people thought but here I think there is no excuse to call yourself a talk show host where politics is often center stage and not seen the interview. In this day and age, he could have seen the entire interview right on the internet. I was dissapointed he didn't even bother and I'm sure many of his followers were as well.

Perhaps burn-out and just going through the motions has taken over. Yes, it's all about ratings but how many times have we seen top rated music stations take their audience for granted and just go through the motions. They invite competition. Perhaps Neal doesn't have anythying to prove anymore but there are tons of people out there who I'm sure would love to have the opportunity Neal has been afforded.

I think Neal's downfall was syndication. I would listen to his show when it was local and when I happened to be in the car - during the clark howard and neal boortz tag team days. Once it went national, it just seemed to be another show that others do better. It was one of the best local shows, it may be 5th or 6th nationally (to me) so I just don't listen.

It was the belinda news story that reminded me the show was still on. So the lawsuit is probably really good free publicity. It wouldn't hurt my feelings for belinda to take that HJAIA kingdom for a few million. They waste more than that on the mayor's relatives.

Boortz does sound like he's mailing it in, research/show-prep wise. Rush sounds like he got a second wind (I think being knocked down a few pegs in the Oxycontin imbroglio made him realize he not immortal on the radio), and the Operation Chaos stunt was a breath of fresh air.

Rush isn't as good as he used to be, but I'm listening to him again.

What has happened to all the happy talk about "it's just radio, it's just entertainment."

Would it be a "breath of freshs air" if George Soros and some hollywood buddies bought up some brokered time between now and the election and arranged to broadcast a bunch of talk about how to sabotage Republicans on election day?

Would that be a breath of fresh air? Would the Republicans run to the Federal Election Commission yelling: "Mama, make him stop!"

If we encourage guerrilla warfare on the radio in the American concept of the self government process, what does that do to the future of talk radio? What does that do to RADIO <period>. Would it be good or bad? For America. For radio.

Final question. We assume Rush had a hand in handing the nomination to the Democrat the Republicans think is least desireable. If the Democrats were to win the election this year, will you still think the Rush stunt was a breath of fresh air?

Wow Goat.. a little sensitive are we? It WAS a breath of fresh air.

Boortz is doing his job.. I'm an occasional listener.. I'm a conservative, but not a libertarian..I don't care for his stance on a lot of things.. but he is doing his job. entertaining

If you are suggesting that I am being a little sensitive over Democrats vs Republicans, I plead "Not Guilty".

If you are suggesting that I am being a little sensitive over what I see as a political process in this country that has too many elements that put us in the same category as some of the third world nations, then I plead "Guilty as charged".

That is a topic for another day in another board.

Back to the basic question: The demise of the Neal Boortz show does not appear to be happening. It entertains some folks. It "charges up the batteries" of some folks. And it draws an audience of detractors and nay-sayers. What else could the station want? What else could the advertisers want?

Where is any competitor that is battling him for "King of the Hill" status in this market?

I have to disagree with most of you. I think Boortz still does a great job.

The Obama nomination seems to have rejuvenated him. At times, he's been sounding angry, which is when he's at his best IMHO.

I agree that most of his schtick is recycled, but the numbers are still there.

The thing Neal does that does annoy me is when he berates callers who have an obvious disability. Last week, he put down a caller who was stammering by immitating the stammering. I've heard him tell callers who were not the brightest that they were...well, not too bright.

A few months ago Neal announced on the air that he had signed his "last" contract with Cox. Maybe this was just another of his "don't believe anything you hear on this program" stunts, but since then, he has been phoning in many of his shows from his home in Naples and taking more trips and vacations than he has in the past. Could this, coupled with his drop in the quality of his shows be a case of "short-timer" syndrome?

I've started listening more and more to Glenn Beck. He's much funnier and far more entertaining. The main thing that drives me crazy about Neal is his use of the word "okay".
- "So you've got Barak Obama, okay. And he was in Memphis okay. And he was up there giving a speech about faaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrnnnnnnesssssssssss, okay. So he's talking about what's faaaaaiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrr okay, and he has this line, okay......."

No kidding. If you want to talk about skills on the mic, it's a miracle this guy ever got a show on a 5,000 watt station, let alone where he is now. The guy literally can't go two sentences without stumbling on something. That's why I say Boortz has done more with less than anyone I can think of and he has to know he got lucky as hell. This also explains how his misplaced braggadocio creeps in every once in a while--- at times he's still the kid who got picked on in high school and got picked last for the pick up games. Oh, and he can't talk.

Considering that Neil is an ex-lawyer, the word "last" could have another meaning. Just because he signed his "last" contract doesn't mean he's not gonna sign another one. (Like dinner was my "last" meal ;).)

"Mari-jou-wanna's bad, m'kay, LSD is bad, m'kay..." :D

Don't forget he started on WRNG back in 1969 when they were the only talk station in town (didn't Ring Radio start out as a community radio station for the long-since-dissolved city of North Atlanta?) and most people thought talk radio was a joke. I still remember the old TV ads for WRNG encouraging people to call in. "WRiNG Ring Radio. Atlanta's Talk King. Deal yourself in!"

I don't think Boortz's delivery is THAT bad, but I seriously doubt he would get any airtime today if it wasn't for his long tenure.

I moved to Fla. in '68 right before Boortz, but I remember living in a boarding house on 14th St. (long since gone), and the lady that ran the place (long since gone) had her radio on WRNG/680 (licensed to N. Atlanta) all the time. It was a novelty then and kind of addictive.

Was their slogan really "Atlanta'a Talk King" (like the end of one word being the same as the beginning of the next word)? I bet its announcers LOVED to say that. :D

I like Neal. I know Neal. I worked with Neal but 39 years on the radio is a very long time. Rush Limbaugh has been pontificating nationally since 1988. "Fibber McGee and Molly" were nationwide radio for 24 years. Arthur Godfrey held CBS hostage for 27 years. Don McNeill had folks marching around the breakfast table for 35 years. Paul Harvey has been bloviating for 57 years on ABC. I hope Neal is no Paul Harvey. Good.................................................................Day!

okay........ obama ....... you sir are no Ronald Reagan, Royal What? Okay, Belinda is saying that she is mad at me....What??? Okay......... A typical line from Neal`s show. Okay............... Okay..........................

Yep. The TV spot showed a pair of (human) hands shuffling and dealing playing cards into a variety of poker hands, and the face cards had the different personalities on the station, and IIRC using the number cards to display the hours of each personality's respective show. Eventually the (human) hands would deal a royal flush (OK, maybe just a royal straight) with the full array of personalities showing. I'm sure that Boortz was one of them.

The station logo was a capital "WRNG" with a lower case "i" in the middle in case you didn't get the station's moniker from the calls.

Needless to say, no talk station today needs to advertise for callers.

As an aside, how many other stations out there are licensed to a city that no longer exists (North Atlanta)? I've heard that WCNN has tried to get that changed, but the FCC keeps turning them down.
