How safe is 94.7 The Wave after KKSF and WNUA flipped?

In answering my own question, it seems a viable format option for CBS to invest in is
in the area of spanish language formats.

With some research and the right hires they could put a scare in Univision in the same way they are taking a huge whack at CC with the AMP format.

For the first time, Spanish language is oversaturated. There are really aren't any significant holes. Look at how far down KSCA, KSSE, and KXOL have fallen recently.

KMVN had near a 3 25-54 with English and has half that early on with Exitos.

With the market down 30%, and Spanish language generating about a 70 power ratio, I don't know that it is a smart investment. You may be able to get some ratings, but good luck on the revenue side.

I agree about the revenue and saturation issues. However, if you are looking to grow the company you must recognize that if you have the entire English language spectrum covered and the Spanish language market share will only keep increasing, then it's an inevitability that CBS and CC will begin to move in on it the Spanish language market share.

My guess is that CBS and/or CC are already formulating super formats to syndicate.
If they aren't then I'm a visionary and they are fools, and I don't think they are fools.

That's not true. If immigration to the US slows or stops, which it certainly has of recent, then there will be no growth for Spanish language stations, and the younger demos will increasingly be born-here. Those born-here Hispanics tend to use English media or a mix favoring English.

My guess is that CBS and/or CC are already formulating super formats to syndicate.

Clear tried with La Preciosa, and was unable to make an impact in the larger markets... at one point they had nearly 30 stations on the adult hits format, and now it is around 15.

There is wide divergence between the tastes and origins of Hispanics in different parts of the US, so there is no national format possibility and never will be.

And there are no super formats. In many markets, every aspect of programming is covered, with variants in the larger markets. LA has 5 regional Mexican variants, 2 adult hits, 3 pop and AC, talk, sports, Hurban, religion, etc. What other broad appeal format is there? Answere: none.

I'm not talking about a "new" format per se. I'm talking about taking a bite out of the already existing lucrative
formats the way CBS is doing with AMP.

If you say they've tried and failed, then ok. Frankly I hope you are right.

Each format is covered 2 to 5 stations deep... in the last book, in 18-49 (which is the only Hispanic sales demo) there were only 2 Spanish language stations in the top 10... which means a bunch of them are not even ranking very well.

If you say they've tried and failed, then ok. Frankly I hope you are right.

They will take opportunities, where the competition is thin or the competitive signals are bad. But there will be no full fledged new initiative... CC did that already, and it did not work uniformly.

You'd think putting KNX on FM would be stupid, but I know I'd listen every day.

As I travel between SLC and LA, I find I listen to KSL much more often now that it's on FM and I don't have to switch bands. In fact, it's the station I listen to most of the day now, since they're one of the few left with live/local talent.

Yet, 1070 gives me static on the Pasadena Freeway north of downtown. You can bet I'd listen to KNX 94.7 all the time!
