Let's trace back to 1992, when the PG first went on strike. Remember the Post-Gazette Newsfax that was sent out to both TV and radio stations, AND posted on the windows inside of PAT buses? Who out there also remembers the Post Gazette radio network, peopled by personalities like Sue Washburn and Don Rebel?

Think of all the staples you find in a newspaper that you don't often find on radio or television. One example is obituaries. A read a survey one day that says it's the FIRST section that people read when they pick up their local newspaper. Though small market radio stations have been doing this for time immemorial, what suddenly shows up one day on WTAE's noon news?

I think you are on to something big here....."All Obituaries, All The Time" is a format that could really take-off here
in Da Burgh! "1020, The Reaper" anyone???? ;)

I remember that on the news. I didn't live in Pgh at the time. They played this very somber music behind it. Part of me was like "holy crap, this is so morbid!!" especially since I didn't know the people. But it was hypnotic. You couldn't stop watching it.

As far as ads in the paper and the department stores, it's not just that there are fewer department stores, it's that Macy's has made a conscious choice to advertise more on TV than in the newspapers. They can do one ad on a national network and be done with it rather than going to all the papers. That was part of the rationale for making everything a Macy's. If the roles were reversed and all we had left was Kaufmann's, they'd probably have as many ads as they always have.

:D The music they played behind it was "December" by George Winston. I still remember it like it was yesterday. As for the department stores, you're right about that. Wal-Mart and Sam's Club are starting to do radio now, but it's all national. It's infuriated a lot of local stations who use national networks. Some of them are dropping their affiliations or scaling back their national news offerings. I can't blame them. XM and Sirius are also doing the same thing.
