Howie Carr will be officially inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in November of this year! He got the official call on his show earlier today.

Congratulations Howie!

Is this confirmed anywhere?

Crap.

Says a lot about our business when Howie Carr is inducted into it's "Hall of Fame".

Bruce Dumont of the Radio Hall of Fame called in just after 5 pm to give Howie the good news. One
of his competitors for the award, Steve Dahl of Chicago, had said he would kill himself if he didn't
get the award but we assume it was just a joke.

Yes it did take way too long to get Jess in but Howie is deserving.

Yes, thats what we want to highlight. Subjects like "Whats your favorite lunchmeat?". making fun of gay people. making fun of the way people speak. blowing off a whole show for Dr. Dejong to talk about dog rashes. 6 figure (almost 8 figure) guys like Howie and Christy railing against people making 25k. Rehashing his newspaper columns and calling that a radio program.

Yes, these are the great accomplishments in radio.

Did Gene Burns ever make it in?

Get it right--he doesn't rehash his columns, he gets his listeners to make suggestions on a topic
which then become a column! Jealous, eh? Yeah, I'm not crazy about "Dr John" (the vet not the
musician) but then some aren't too crazy about Max Robins either, and it isn't a whole show. While
he isn't always at the top of the ratings he does pretty well (often beating the sage of Sag Harbor--
er, Manchester by the Sea) and he's a marquee name for a station which admittedly ain't what it used
to be. But who knows. (Have been listening to Reese this morning...not bad.)

Burns should be in the HoF if he isn't already.

Carr is entertaining and those who don't like it are welcome to go to NPR for enlightened discussion
of provocative issues.
"Ha ha ha ha ha (clap)"--Ted Knight
"(Unintelligable)"--Tom Menino
"Why don't we ask Osama bin La--er, Osama Obama. Obama."--Ted Kennedy
(Jethro Tull "Aqualung" clip, on behalf of future WRKO talk host Jim "Sitting On A Park Bench" Marzilli)

Interesting...fair number of pubradio folks/shows on there, but none since Car Talk in 1998. I'm a bit surprised Terry Gross (from Fresh Air) isn't in there, she certainly fits the mold. And frankly, she's a helluva better radio host than several of the other people already in there.

Max Robbins, the Vet, The Chumpline, Wizrad of Ah's....are all excuses for Howie to be lazy...and sit back for an hour. none of them require any work on his part.

His column is lazy too. Ever hear the comment "I get a column a year off of that topic". I get the impression he has a yearful of columns in a looseleaf binder and rewrites one every day.

I'm not neccesarily looking for NPR discussion.....but how about some local issues? He has thrown away any local content in favor of "syndicating" himself on a bunch of small little stations.

For what it's worth, Jay Exseverin thinks of himself as a "political consultant" and still wants to be a national player. He doesn't know the Boston area (except for how to find call girls), and very rarely ventures out of his mansion. He doesn't do local issues either. (He'd rather talk about Hillary's "fat arse".)

(Raccoon, everyone knows your a Howie fan...or a Howie apologist. you dont have to answer every post...)

He does what works--he does "what people are talking about at the water cooler".
Local issues...he does talk about turnpike tolls, the Marzilli incident (hey, it's entertaining
as new details come out). He prob should do more, granted...I do know on election eve
he invites candidates to speak their piece for a minute. Nothing like what Jerry did with
seat belts, New Braintree, and taxes of course--but even then sometimes he'll have
Carla Howell or Barbara Anderson on, etc

Stuff like chumpline is a way for listeners to get involved and say funny things (and
was ripped off by the likes of the Big Show's weiner whiner line--and is a big reason
for that show's success!)
He does indeed do local stuff in the last hour--but of course the geniuses at Entercom
often cut off the last 25 minutes for the Really Exciting Red Sox Pregame Show. So
Howie's flagship has to refer people to WCRN for that.

Sevvy doesn't do local stuff at all? Wouldn't know, don't really listen to him.

Congrats to Howie.....always a good listen. He's a Boston institution as much as any current broadcaster.

Did I finally figure out how to do the quote thing? I guess I'll find out when I hit post.

In any event, the Red Sox pregame carries significant revenue and 3 1/2 hours of Howie is more than enough to run all the spots that are sold. When Howie is 100% sold at a rate that exceeds that of the pregame, then you can make derisive "genius" comments and have a point. Until then it seems like EDS.

Crud, I didn't figure out the quote function. Oh well, have a good weekend all.

This is the same logic that has the "genius'" selling informercials on Saturday morning...
