Howie Carr Inducted into Radio Hall Of Fame

Jealous anyone? You can hate Howie all you want, but he has his following. He's been on for a long time and whatever he's doing seems to work. Congrats to Howie!

indeed!

>>Anyone care to list their awards

if this counts I've been helping SSC Radio WMWM since 7 yrs before Howie even
got onto Jerry's show as a guest. (MY first show 3/12/81 :) )

Thanks! I had fun doing the country show yesterday...nothing like playing Toby Keith's "I Wanna
Talk About Me" into Rubber Rodeo's "Anywhere With You"...Homer & Jethro covering the Beatles...
Jerry Jeff, Dolly & Porter, Hank Williams ("Move It On Over" & "Fly Trouble") etc.! And I was on today
doing local blues 11-noon followed by the first half of the Juke Joint (Sister Lisa finished the show off).
It's a heck of a lot of fun!

Well, Howard Stern fits into the category of being there "a long, long time and seems to work", but I wouldn't want to be him.

I don't think it's jealousy, just sad to see this held up as a standard of how radio should be done.

Bob does Blues for the most part and could be nominated for a W.C Handy award.

I know my buddy who does the sat afternoon blues show on 91.5 WUML Lowell from 3 to 6 PM (streaming on the web too! ) was nominated for one a few years back

I think the late Mai Cramer got a Handy award for "keeping the blues alive"--maybe Holly Harris, too

btw for those who want to attend the black tie dinner for Howie's induction--a mere $500 per ticket
"Expense account" time at Guest St. (see RadioHOF.org)

I HATE Stern, and I wouldn't listen to him if you paid me, but you have to admit he changed radio. I don't know if he's in the hall or not, but he should be. What a bad standard Howie sets. A guy who keeps his show clean enough, so you don't have to worry if the kids are in the car and hear it, and still stay edgy enough so that adults get the humor. Just because you don't like the guy, or his politics doesn't mean that he doesn't have a good show.

...for the better or for the worse?

I hope simply "changing radio" isn't the standard for the hall of fame. For that matter, the Mays boys "changed radio".

No, it's well beyond "liking the guy" or "disliking the guy" or his politics.

(As a matter of fact I agree with most of his politics.)

However, it's all lowball, lowest denominator crap that doesn't raise the bar on anything.

Add to the fact that Entercom removed most of his competition.....and that most of his 'fame' came from being a newspaper writer, not a talk show host.

As soon as there was competition (Severin) he lagged behind.

Many things bother me about Howie Carr. First, how he stabbed Jerry Williams in the back and basically stole
away his show. This is definitely the way Jerry felt according to his daughter (she also had a radio show).
Secondly the way he has disowned his two daughters from his first marriage. He never even acknowledged them
in his book dedication. Anyone who didn't know about the Janet fix up with current Kathy would not know
he had 5 daughters, not 3. Much more, but I'm too close to the scene to go further.

For anyone who has listened to Howie for any length of time knows he is not a nice person.

I can't see that he's dedicated to anything besides himself.

He's also no friend of radio.

Yes someone like me knows about his first marriage and first 2 daughters, etc. I've met him
twice and he seems like a nice guy but you never know, I guess--he's certainly no friend to
Entercom these days as he takes pure delight in saying on air how their stock is taking
a tumble (we know which company he's referring to). He'll bolt for someone else come 2012
if he still feels like doing radio at that point. Maybe he'd give it up and write a book about what he
calls The Kennedy Crime Family...I think he took advice from former Hub anchorman Chuck
Scarborough who once told him (as Howie has related on air), "Bleep them before they bleep you."
