How's the locality in the San Luis Obispo/Monterey area?

I would like to know how things are going radio wise in the San Luis Obispo & Monterey areas, since I'm going for a trip from Vegas soon? Is there still localism in those markets? Any FM stations that have Elvis, Seacrest, & Bush in those areas, now that local DJ's like the ones in SLO & Monterey are extinct, & so are Fresno & Bakersfield? Tell us what you think about the state of radio today in SLO & Monterey? How has AM & FM radio in those areas changed since the 70's? I know it's not a research project, but let me how it goes on that.

The best way to see what these two markets are doing is to:

A: Pull up radio-locator.com to see what's in these markets.

B. Look at their websites...

The Monterey Bay market is smaller than Fresno and S.L.O. is smaller than Bakersfield. The localism is probably similar the two Central Valley Markets you referred to.

Just my opinion, but the bright spot there is KPIG (107.5) in the Monterey Bay and KPYG (94.9) in SLO. It's a quirky combination of AAA, rock, blues, and progressive country (I don't know what else to call it). It's definitely local. It may not be your cup of tea, but it's unique and definitely worth checking out.

I know 94.9 was licensed to Cambria for many years as KOTR (K-Otter), but they sold it to it's present owners some years back & the licensee is in Cayucos, too.

I knew a lady who worked at KOTR and really enjoyed that station. The new owners maintained pretty much the same format, but they really cater mostly to the Monterey Bay signal, not the SLO signal. So it doesn't sound as local as KOTR did. But at least it's not voice tracked from Texas. They also have an AM station (KPIG AM) that's licensed to Piedmont which covers about 1/2 the Bay Area during the day and maybe 10 miles in some directions at night. I can't really figure out what the reason was for changing the COL to Cayucos. The transmitter stayed in the same place AFAIK.

I would argue SLO is slightly more localized than Monterey-Salinas. Most of the advertising is local businesses. Many VT'd dayparts, but 93.3, 96.1, 98.1, 101.3, 104.5, & 106.1 all have live local morning shows. Much of the imaging is tied to the "Central Coast" region.

I've been out of radio since 1993...but started in my home town of SLO...KCPR, KSLY, KZOZ and KKUS.

Things started to change rapidly right around I left the area (1988). Wish I knew what was going on down there. Out of curiosity I wish I knew what a marker like that is paying (or are all sations pipe in their on-air talent?....think I started out at a whopping $800 a month!

KYAA Radio AM 1200 Monterey/Santa Cruz area is 50's-70's OLDIES formatted. It has a good day signal, in fact, I can pick it up here in Las Vegas in the morning at Sunrise and afternoon just before Sunset.

I had to drive out to Camp Roberts, by Paso Robles, for business a couple weeks ago. Listened to Q-104.5 when I got out of range of the Fresno FMs. Was a good station, decent music mix for me, was in the area too late to catch the morning show, but heard alot of community bulletin board type announcements.
