Hy Lit Brings the Beatles to Philadelphia 45 years ago today

..........Hy took to the stage to introduce the Beatles. The crowd immediately enveloped into a roaring frenzy for the entire duration of the concert. In fact the cheering and the screams were so loud and at times there was such emotion that it was difficult to even hear the Beatles sing.

When the concert was over the security issue facing the Beatles getting into Philadelphia confronted them again.

It was determined that all the hotels in town were being staked out by frantic girls, and that secure lodging would be a problem. So the Beatles were secretly whisked to Hy's house where they were able to spend the night and get some r&r before traveling to the next city.

Once the Beatles left, Hy created a clever contest. He would give away the sheets and pillow cases that the Beatles slept on in a major WIBG Radio 99 contest, which sent the city into a frenzy once again.

And everyone is under the impression that Philly hated anything British, Surf/Beach and Folk, which was far from the truth, in fact, Philly was one of the biggest British Invasion cities as far as sales and popularity, as quoted by Mr. Epstein. The local soul jocks would have you believe that Motown and Soul were the real sounds of Philly, which is a bunch of bunk, started by the Heater with the Repeator and H.L., and the in your face OGL playlist.

Philadelphia fell hard for the British invasion. The first Beatles record was played on WDAS in late 1962. It was called 'Please Please Me', and was an acetate on the Vee Jay Records, an R&B label that was based in Chicago with reps in Philadelphia.

From the Broadcast Pioneers:
.....A couple years later, George nicknamed a recording artist, “The Ice Man” because he was “so cool on stage.” That was Jerry Butler. In late 1962, Georgie Woods started playing on WDAS a “new” group called “The Beatles.” The song was “Please, Please Me” on the African-American owned label, Vee-Jay (the same label Butler recorded for).

The first time I ever heard the Beatles was on WIBG playing "From Me To You" (1963?) Of course at the time I didn't hear it too much for the group to grab my attention.......
