There is an obvious, blatant, inconsistency that I have observed involving the playing of Christmas music on the radio and I would like for someone to explain it.

Here's the scenario...The songs that we have heard on B101 and Sunny during the Christmas season could be considered tradtional, American music, and they are played for approximately six weeks out of the year...

To me...this is in deep contrast to what others have said on this board. Apparently...ratings actually INCREASE during this time of the year or these stations wouldn't feature Christmas music...at least that's what some have said here on Radio-Info.

So why isn't there even ONE station that plays traditonal music or even REAL OLDIES 24/7?

Your answer...Because there aren't enough sponsors to support it...The demographics are too old...Ratings have NOTHING or VERY LITTLE to do with revenue.

If this is so than it would make sense to me that there shouldn't be enough sponsors to support Christmas music 24/7 for six weeks. How can it be possible that those who listen to the type of Christmas music that is played for THIS LONG PERIOD OF TIME would suddenly be turned off by the likes of Sinatra or Tony Bennett on December 26th?

OK, ratings INCREASE during these six weeks, but WHO is listening...WHO ARE THE TARGET DEMOGRAPHICS THAT WILL SUPPORT THE SPONSORS? By previous arguments it would seems to me that mostly "set in their ways," older dempgraphics would make up most of the Christmas music listenership. So how can there be a legitimate BUYING audience to support six weeks of Christmas music?

Are you telling me that the "I AIN'T SAYIN' SHE A GOLDDIGGA" crowd who supposedly SPENDS ALL THE MONEY AND SUPPORTS THE ADVERTISING is suddenly and unexpectedly mesmorized by "Merry Christmas Darling" during November and December and then on December 26th suddenly decides that it's time to tune into rap again?

Any thoughts?

The Christmas music on B101 and or Sunny..is played in the shopping Malls during Nov and Dec..while people of all ages are shopping.

They are forced to listen to it. If they have an Arbitron Diary they will have to write in B101 or Sunny..
That's my take.
As far as Frank Sinatra..I don't think people who are not a fan of his ..would like him even more if they heard a Christmas song of his...

My mother had 12 vinyl albums of him so..I like him ...but would not listen long to a radio station playing big band music..

That's really my mother's favorite...

Thank you for responding...but I'm sorry, I don't buy it.

I actually thought of that answer before I posted this...but the shopping malls are LOUD with the the presence of people...and anyone who has walked through a mall has observed the acoustics.

In a mall, unless the radio is blaring, advertisements are very difficult to hear, even if you were TRYING to listen to them.

Not to mention that in a store, radios are almost never SO LOUD that people can actually hear advertisements...and even if they could, who is paying attention?

I can't take this.
I had to walk twelve miles from the parking lot.
Look at all these people.
Am I the only one who speaks English?
Get the HELL out of my way.
The kids are hungry.
They have to go to the bathroom.
I still have to cook dinner and pick up Suzy from soccer practice.
I can't find the right gift in the right size.
What do you mean it's on backorder?
Isn't there ANYONE who can answer my question?
Where are all the sales people?
Can't they hire more help?
How can it take 20 minutes to get a slice of pizza in the food court?
Look at all these teenagers causing problems.
Don't leave that package unattended!
Where's my wallet? I thought I had it.

These are just a few examples of the reality of Christmas shopping...so how can all those who are FORCED to listen to these stations actually hear the advertisements?

I suppose you could make a legitimate argument that there may be enough target demograhpics to support ONE Christmas station...but how can there be TWO Christmas stations for six weeks but not ONE standards or real oldies station the rest of the year?

I sincerely believe that it is a conspiracy brought on by corporate America to continue to dumb down the population. Maybe they think that we need a break during Christmas.

I agree with your point on the listeners at the malls or in the offices. During the week leading up to Christmas, even a WMMR fan in my department started listening to B101. Lite-FM in NYC did a survey of listeners and found young and old alike prefered the standard Holiday music that they had heard all their lives.

However, they don't exactly like the singers - just the songs themselves. Its like comfort food. When the Holidays are over, they go back to their favorite stations. As to the rap mentioned in the first message of this thread, I highly doubt that Power 99 was playing Karen Carpenter singing "Merry Christmas, Darling"! I also highly doubt that the typical Power 99 listener had switched to Sunny or the B during December.

In the individual stores, it is possible to hear the music and the ads. I have done remotes from malls during the buying season and I know the shoppers hear and they will catch key words such as a stores name and location.

It's not the "Gold Digger" crowd that likes to hear Sinatra Christmas tunes. It's the B101/Sunny/JJZ/DAS/OGL/MGK/Ben crowds. On Dec. 26th they go back to Kenny G or Michael Bolton, not Kanye West.

Maybe they like the traditional stuff for the nostalgia value... who knows, but look at WPEN's demographics while they were still Standards and it becomes obvious that the Christmas listeners don't want to hear traditional music all year long.

WOGL's ratings tell me that they ARE "Real Oldies". The 50s Oldies/Rock Olides format is another story.

No, they primarily go to Adult Contemporary, Hit Music, Urban AC and Jazz.

There are only 2 stations in Philly that play all rap: WUSL & WPHI.

WRDW & WIOQ both play SOME rap, but it's mixed in among Pop & Rock.

I'd add classic rock to that list. Last year, MGK has a substantial dip during the Winter book. I think MGK probably lost some of their 35-54 female listeners during the period. But afterward, they went back to MGK.

I wonder if XPN, HYY and RTI also lose some listeners to B and Sunny from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

Yes! You'd be surprised how many young people like the fact that there's a radio staion in their market devoted to Christmas music around the holidays.

Okay, I'm just gonna come out and say it - I think your problem is that you're overly weird, and should seriously consider getting some professional help.

Happy New Years! :)
