What's ironic about Mike 93.7 is that while it may be seen as "an mp3 player on shuffle", it only covers the types of music that some people may like--despite alleged diversity. If your type of
music is not really what they play one solution is to, ironically enough, buy an mp3 player and
fill it with your own favorite types of music and listen to that.
They are offering _some_ variety but going toward mass appeal whenever possible. Sure, some
may tune out when certain songs come on but they do have a core demo, and an attractive one.
My blues show on WMWM has some types of music that people might enjoy but Mike might not
think so. (I play a lot of newer releases and some classics and throw stuff in like--well, on
yesterday's show, I threw in 'oldies' like Ain't Got No Home and I Don't Know Why (But I Do)
by Clarence Frogman Henry and Let it Rock by Chuck Berry. I played a cut from the forthcoming
Buddy Guy & BB King release. Will Mike play that? No. How about Foghat--yes, that Foghat.
Do you know they have a new CD out? I played a cut from it yesterday. Doubt Mike will.
But OK, maybe they'll dip into the vaults for Slow Ride...
But they will play Paradise by the Dashboard Light, In Da Club, Closing Time, Faith, The
Tide is High, Unbelievable, Beverly Hills, You Got Lucky, etc.
While it is "we play everything" (allegedly) it actually narrows down to certain types of music
that a certain generation/demo may enjoy. The oddball factor is maybe when they throw in
a country song like Friends in Low Places, standards like That's Amore, maybe an oh-wow oldie
like early 80s Sausalito Summernight, etc.
For real variety some may want to check out something like college radio. My show (boast,
boast) has stuff like the local cajun/zydeco bands Boogaloo Swamis and Squeezebox Stompers,
classics from Little Walter (not the oldies DJ) and Muddy Waters, Maria Muldaur, Bob Malone
(Calif.-based pianist), the New Orleans sounds of Clifton Chenier and Big Al Carson, and
the great folk-blues duo of Paul Rishell and Annie Raines.
Great music, IMO. None of which is on We Play Everything 93.7
Just once, for kicks, maybe Mike should play Muddy's "You Need Love"--which got stolen
by Led Zeppelin for "Whole Lotta Love". Or the jug band cuts on Maria Muldaur's recent
album. Or the rousing "Big Bayou" by the Swamis. Or...
(Note: yeah, 93.7 may play Maria's Midnight at the Oasis but they won't play cuts from
her recent album...)
Baby, way down inside. Woman you need love.
