"I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love"

Has this ever happened to you? There are songs you’ve heard dozens of times and just never paid attention to. You don’t hate them; they just do nothing for you one way or the other. Then one time you hear it somewhere and it suddenly smacks you in the head and completely blows you away.

As I’ve gotten older, I find myself taking notice of older songs in strange ways… instrumentation; backing vocals; closer attention to the lyrics; sometimes just a one-chord musical riff. Or sometimes it could even be the setting or circumstances of where you hear it. Different songs affect different people in different ways.

In the last 10 or 15 years since I’ve developed a fondness for finer music, this has happened to me with “A Certain Smile” by Johnny Mathis, “Return To Me” by Dean Martin, “Beyond The Sea” by Bobby Darin, “Broken Hearted Melody” by Sarah Vaughan, “There I’ve Said It Again” by Bobby Vinton, “Catch The Wind” by Donovan, “And I Love You So” by Perry Como, and “Only Love Can Break A Heart” by Gene Pitney (which I started paying attention to after he died last year).

I recently experienced this “sense of awakening” with Bob Lind’s 1966 hit “Elusive Butterfly.” When you listen to the words, you realize the man was a sheer poet. (Bob Lind also wrote it). It’s so much more profound than your typical “ooh yeah baby I love you” pop song lyrics. According to his website, he lives in Florida and is still performing and writing.

Some interesting video clips:

Oh yeah. That happens. I experience it at least a couple of times a week.

It is especially weird when I am singing along with a song that I've been playing on the radio for 20 to 40 years and I SUDDENLY hear some lyric that I swear was never there before!

It happens to me all the time. In fact, before starting this radio station, I was aware of most of the basic music, but I'd never paid a lot of attention to it. Now I find I'm a major fan, and somewhat in awe of many of the preformers I'd previously looked over.
