I don't want to come off as harsh, but I want to mention my choice for Peters Permanent Replacement

Re: The Future of World News Tonight

I did not include Lester Holt because I was under the impression that he's under a long-term contract with NBC News/MSNBC and probably wouldn't be able to jump networks for at least a couple of more years. Were he available to jump networks, I certainly would have to put him near the top of the list of possible anchors.

Unless Holt becomes available, I will stand with my earlier guess that Elizabeth Vargas will get the "World News Tonight" anchor chair, but Charles Gibson (besides remaining with "Good Morning America") will get the job of anchoring special events and breaking news.

Charles would be my first choice too. He is an excellent anchor and he has a smooth serious style.

This would be ok for me.

Interesting ideas, but I personally like the solo thing on the evening news. But, I guess that is what we are all used to. Whoever the choice is, I will likely stick with ABC News, because it is my favorite out of the big 3.
______________

That is an interesting idea. Charles could stay with GMA, but still anchor breaking news events, but I really would like Charles to do WNT. He is, like I said in an earlier post, and excellent anchor. Someone also suggested Lou Dobbs. That isn't a bad choice. It would be better for him, because he has a home in New Jersey.
______________

Very good suggestion. Didn't think of that one but it's an obvious choice. John Seigenthaler is excellent. I think he's even better than Brian Williams. Wonder what is keeping any network from snatching him up. Don't know John Seigenthaler's background in the industry, must be some sort of pecking order and/or internal politics that I'm unknowledgable about. But indeed, John Seigenthaler would be great!

How does anyone feel about Scott Pelley of CBS? Dan Rather
often said he wanted Pelley as his replacement, although he
never came right out and designated him as such. But if it
appears that John Roberts will become permanent anchor on
CBS (and I think he will, eventually), might Pelley be interested
in changing networks?

Also, is John Seigenthaler related to one of the founders of
USA Today? I believe his name was John Seigenthaler as well.

In the meantime, it looks like ABC is giving on-air tryouts to
some of its own people; I've seen Bob Woodruff anchoring the
past two nights.
Edited by bpatrick on 08/13/05 05:49 PM.

John Roberts is good and Scott Pelley is good too. All good suggestions for CBS or ABC. I didn't think of those either. But now that you mention them, it seems that one of these guys could do the job well. I did see Bob Woodruff anchoring last Friday and he didn't seem to jump out to me as being the new anchor. But, I'll have to analyze him more if he is on again. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about John Seigenthaler and USA Today. Wish I did. So someone chime in if they do!
