Edward M. Kennedy was elected the thirty seventh president of the U.S. in November of 1972. He served
two full terms, then returned to the Senate. Kennedy was seen as a hero in August of 1969 when he
saved the life of Mary Jo Kopechne after his car tumbled over the Dike Bridge on Chappaquiddick Island.

You're forgetting the drunk part. This scenario couldn't have happened, as I believe it is clear why he left her there. A good night's sleep will that that ETOH level down to zero.
