I hear the promo about KTAR is doing Traffic/Weather from Morning to Midnight starting on Monday March 20, 2006.

It is great KTAR is trying to boost ratings to get their Traffic/Weather report in Phoenix.
Edited by James1985 on 03/17/06 07:52 PM.

It can't hurt, but it won't help long-term. I bet KFYI joins this trend before too long. KTAR was the first to do midday traffic reports back around 1990 or so but that hardly matters now because KFYI had to follow suit to stay competitive. That's the trouble with trying to boost ratings this way. Anyone can add more traffic and weather if they want to. But only one station can have Rush, or Paul Harvey, or Joe Crummey, or the Suns, etc... Your ratings are determined by what you offer that no other station is able to.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles-ation of Phoenix continues.

Maybe the 9-mid traffic reporter should do a show and replace the godawful Clark Howard. Ugh. Seriously though, in the aforementioned LA, KFI does "the most frequent traffic reports" as far as talk goes, with, IIRC, 4 hourly except overnights. KFWB and KNX do them six times hourly when they're not running their talk or PBP. The other way KTAR has an advantage is by having a local show at all times and running traffic more frequently than KFYI can with breaks every 15 minutes. And Phoenix would be one of the smallest markets with an all-news station, so it'd be a waste anyway.

Eventually, KFYI will pick this up, but for now, it's more window dressing that actual content. 50kW WTAM/Cleveland was the most recent in a string of mid-market CC talk station to do 24/7 traffic and while it sounds nice, it's a joke. When Salem does it like they do in LA, you'll really know the LAization has flourished.

KPCC does 6 an hour, and KCRW, KCLU and KVCR do that many during morning and evening drive.. KTLK does 6 an hour. KABC does 4 an hour.

Re: I hear about KTAR is becoming a first station in Phoenix to do Traffic/Weather from Morning to Midnight

Interesting. I have noticed that both KT'R and KFYI have bulked up their traffic reporters lately. We will see how long this lasts.

It's about time that we have better radio traffic coverage. I am from Detroit, MI and there are two main AM news channels: News/Talk 760 WJR and WWJ News Radio 960. Both are two of the oldest radio stations in the U.S. WWJ is true 24 hour news radio: all news, all the time with traffic & weather together every ten minutes on the 8's. WJR has their Big Seven traffic report every half hour including Sunday nights. I wonder if we will ever see Phoenix have that type of coverage.

Lastly, how is KT'R going to do weather? I am assuming it will be a tape of Ed Phillips with an occasional live update. How will KFYI respond to that? Have Royal Norman phone in the report? Has anyone ever heard Royal live on KFYI?

Re: I hear KTAR

what i'd like to hear is..

all news, all the time... 620.. ktar

phoenix is the fifth largest city in the us and the largest capital city.

this would work.

retain the current hosts for special features and commentary.

And will continue to give short shrift to traffic on the West side (where most of the new growth and increased traffic is now occuring)

Perception is in the ear of the beholder?

I have to disagree with you as I've railed
here a few times against--what I perceive
as--KT'R's "west valley-centric" traffic.

Quite often I'll catch Deputy Dan at 6:16,
6:26 and 6:36 and it's all I-17, I-10 and
99th Avenue, stuff like that. To my ear
he consistently gives short shrift to I-10
from Ahwatukee, US 60, et al. Which is
why I bounce in and out of 55/FYI to catch
the traffic twins with east side/west side.
The unfortunate thing there is having to
put up with the nimrod 5-8am host--he would
like me to mention his name--who won't shut
up when it's time for the traffic window.

Well, since I live in the West Valley, I'll start listening to KTAR then. All the other stations are Ahwatukee-centric. Yeah, give the traffic on US60, but you need to tell us what's going on around I-17 North of 101 as well. Most stations don't cover Far North/West Phoenix well at all. Note to broadcasters: The world doesn't end at Metrocenter!!!
