I hope WBZ survives beyond our generation, WCBS Newsradio 88 going ESPN

I'm trying to wrap my head around the fact that Audacy ended WCBS-AM, with revenues of $29.7 million, determining that it would be more financially advantageous to lease the frequency and just keep the Mets broadcasts. Are the lease terms for the 880 frequency that lucrative for Audacy?
As has been mentioned, a large portion of that billing came from sports, not the news operation. Audacy kept the sports franchise as part of the AM 880 deal. And the news operation was much lower than ever and likely not profitable or, based on projections, not likely to be profitable soon.

I think this statement is key (and something that most are overlooking). Annual billings people are quoting are from 2023 (last year). We don’t know what Billings are looking like in 2024. Even if 880 was profitable today Audacy saw the ratings in a steep decline since WINS started broadcasting on FM. Projections probably showed decreases in ratings and billings and sadly losing money if not today then within the next year or two.

This is what so many people miss when they look at billing numbers. Most of the top ten billers have play-by-play, which brings in a good percentage of their revenue but is also matched by a huge expense for rights fees. Having a sports franchise in a major market doesn't mean that the rest of the station will be profitable - and it often isn't.
