I know ALT 103.7 (KVIL) hasn't ever had great ratings, but a 1.1?!?!?

This move, unlike the previously discussed talent addition, does seem to imply there is not an imminent format change coming to 103.7.

This new guy is coming from WRFF Philadelphia, an iHeart station that gets much better ratings than KVIL:

So in other words, they are trying hard to revive this "dead horse"....

Fat chance of that happening. These new hires will be Kaplan puppets who will take the fall when the ratings remain in the mud. There are more issues with this station than the music, too.

Ms. Taylor I see was involved with Go 96.3 in Minneapolis; that station was an utter ratings abomination! Not sure I'd include that experience on my bio if I were her.

Flip KVIL to Soft AC, Urban AC or Rhythmic AC and call it a day.

Totally agree!

Unless Audacy is going to spend the money, it makes no sense to flip to Urban AC or Adult R&B. They are at a big disadvantage, they have no sister Urban station to sell with it and even though KZMJ and KRNB are signally challenged, they are ingrained to Black Folk in this market, especially KRNB. Common sense will tell you if their research says that it would work for them that they would have done it. They only thing 103.7 has going for it is a better signal, and IMO that's not enough, unless they are going to be patient enough to grow the format, and market the station differently.

I don't see any indication that they're looking to spend money. The formats they've started have been mainly unhosted.

The advantage they have with Alt is the format has a national programming platform. Those other formats don't have that.

Exactly!!!!! Its going to a whole bunch of cash to see the ROI on flipping to Adult R&B. To take on Service and Radio One is going to be a tough road to hoe, but it they want to take a shot, I say go for it. What can they do better than what KRNB and KZMJ are doing right now other than have a better signal.

At least 91X and The Current were mentioned in Taylor’s bio. Can’t knock those success stories.

Oh, and Lazlo’s last day on ‘VIL was today. I take it that you’re probably celebrating with fireworks?

Is that true? That's great news!!!

Has his boring show been cancelled in Detroit, too?

Indeed, I might have to crack out some bottle rockets...

I do hold 91X and The Current in high regard, btw.

Confirmed it as such on Facebook.

You may say it’s boring (I’ll admit...I get a chuckle out of how you hate him and his show with a passion)...my home market says otherwise. He would’ve been given the boot last year if corporate didn’t see the strong ratings and billing power he’s brought in.

Lazlo’s got talent, there’s no denying it. He wouldn’t have had a near 20-year run in KC (plus the time he’s spent in Detroit, his hometown) if he didn’t have any.

Darn it. He's still on in Detroit.

Congrats to the alternative music fans in DFW for ridding yourselves of his boring, out-of-place, very low rated (locally) program.

Afentra was the star of the Buzz. Station's numbers went into the toilet after she was fired. Even with 105.1's flip to rock, they still have not recovered fully (but at least have rebounded nicely from the low water mark).

I’ve always thought he was horrendous on-air, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a better manager. So, in its infinite wisdom, Entercom/Audacy expanded his on-air presence and reduced his management duties, and they can’t figure out why ratings in KC have tanked.

He obviously has his fans, but his show has always been a “you get it or you don’t“ thing. Maybe that’s a lot of shows, but those that don’t make effort to appeal to the masses have a lower ceiling than those that do.

On-air, that was probably true. The Buzz in KC, though, was about more than just the personalities. The music mix and rotation was well designed, and the station events were amazing. Lazlo was the reason for both of those. He had great relationships with the artists and their promoters, and he had organizational skills that were second-to-none. The Buzz got a large number of fans and free press from the concerts and social events he organized, and he was almost always one of the first to break new music in the format. When the events stopped happening because of the pandemic, the ratings there started to decline, and the bottom has since fallen out. If I had been in charge, I would’ve had Lazlo trying to replicate his event successes in my other markets and had him involved heavily in research and music, but management at Audacy seems to have gone the other way.

Lazlo was not the only program dropped. Klein & Ally was dropped from mornings as well. One has to think this is either an indication that Audacy's national programming initiatives have failed or that KVIL's days as Alt are numbered.

How about both?

Removing the hosts puts more focus on the music. But what if the music is the real problem?

More likely the case. I could be wrong, but the whole initiative can be boiled down to Entercom/Audacy's need to cut costs and their programmers trying to make it work. In the end, it was trying to ram a square peg into a round hole, and it's only a matter of time until the whole effort falls apart.

Cutting costs only works if they're able to somehow improve revenues, and that's where their "national" approach hasn't delivered. They haven't been able to capitalize on a larger programming platform because it hasn't resonated with audiences and the lower ratings have meant lower revenues. Eliminating talent completely certainly is another way to cut costs. But it won't help selling their brand.

It's quite telling that the last three Audacy Picks have been COIN, Foals, and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, who all have top 10 hits on Alternative (Foals have even hit #1 once). COIN got 89% approval from the respondents, Foals' results haven't come out yet. I think they've begun to realize that the music they're playing is part of the problem.

I don't think KVIL is going to be flipped yet but this is likely the final attempt to save the station in its current format. I don't think there's anything viable to flip KVIL to so one final attempt to save it is the only thing they can really do at the moment.

The problem with choosing Foals and Nathaniel Rateliff is that KXT has both in regular rotation.(Especially Nathaniel Rateliff) Now you start to sound like KXT but with commercials. I think that most people are going to pick the commercial free route if presented with a similar playlist. I tuned in this morning, briefly, and they played a few of the old KXT staples.(David Gray, Milky Chance’s Colorado)

...and we’re back to the earlier point about just listening to KXT for indie-alternative.
