I Missed it; Is J,Love on the unemployment line? 1230 on the skids?

How could the son of the founder of a marginal radio station, probably the only source of energy this ragady orginazation had, be cut in an a BLANTENT cost cutting move??? I

I don't mean to hammer anyone's good intenions for broadcasting integrity but I have have been listening to The Pharoh, Miss C, GlennO, Charles and The Black Lion for 7+ years while the programing has been reduced to Sunday Church "Paid Programing" and original content down to 9 hours A DAY??? God bless Big Daddy, we need him even more,,,

philrandy...Jay was one of the owners of WDBZ along with his sister. He made out well when the station was sold to Radio One, from what I hear. Radio One is having trouble and you might see even more reductions at The BUZZ. When Ross owned it and leased it to R1, he had a say in what went on there. Now, he doesn't.

Economic reality, folks: It's too costly to run a local talk station if you're only going to get a 1.0 share.

Look I understand and agree with these points. but it doesn't explain in any way how cutting the only real energy at this station will improve that 1.0? Their real problem is the land-locked format of talk radio that consists of the same 25 or so callers! Shouldn't that responsibility fall to the PD?

I concur..Jay Love my fav on that station and to replace it with a "weaker" show was big mistake. I also concur with that comment that the same 20 callers call in (i don't think it was that much) with same comments..hahah they were at least humorous.

The idea is not to improve the 1.0...It's to cut the salary. Let's look at this thing for a minute. R1 owns a nationally syndicated talk network called Syndication One..(Sharpton, Jesse...etc.). Why at the end of the day would they pay local salaries when they are already paying for "Nationally recognized" hosts? Secondly, that setup (which is ultimately where it will go) will likely maintain a very similar share, and increase the variety of callers. Next R1 owns 3 stations in this market designed to "superserve" the african american community, which is only 11.3% of the total population. This equates to around $14M in targeted and available advertising dollars, which KISSFM also courts to a certain degree. That's not a lot of money to support live and local on a 1K urban talk, especially when you have $23M invested in MOJO, and $2.8M in DBZ. Those amounts translate in almost 2 years of total market ad dollars allocated to the target demographic. This does not even consider the recent declines in advertising dollars being spent by advertisers. R1 3rd QTR net income was off 40% from last year, operating income off almost 8%, an underperforming LA station, and stock prices are sitting at $1.61 a share....not to mention a predicted soft 4th quarter. There is simply a concerted effort to stop the bleeding here.

Too bad. I kind of enjoy the local hosts on 1230. It's nice to have local shows that deal specifically with problems in Cincinnati. Al Sharpton for one is nuts and two can only comment on national issues. 1230 needs more local hosts than WLW. Anybody can host a show like Scott Sloan's where we learn about bodily functions.

First, let me say Jeri Tolliver cut me down off the cross in the old days. She will always be special to me.

Jay Love had a wonderful way of throwing gas on the fire and then looking around and saying, "Who, me?" He was engaging, he told callers when they were nuts, he probed a point until interesting became over-the-top and he had a great sense of timing. He never took himself too seriously and he only lost his sense of humor when the caller was an absolute idiot and deserved it.

As much as I disagreed with him, I had to admire his talent.

As much as I love Jeri, I miss Jay.

I wish them both good things.

No argument there, but unless and until smaller entities who are passionate about content, and make their living with the station(s) actual success and community involvement, and not by rolling debt while playing with public money, own a station like that or any other, it probably won't happen.
