Out of necessity the missus and I had to tune into the Dallas Cowboys Radio network to keep up with this week's game while traveling.

Why in the world is Brad Sham such a revered figure in the Dallas radio scene? It's great that he and the bag of nothing Babe inform us 4 times that Tony Romo threw the touchdown pass (as if it could be someone else) and finally he and Babe, while talking on top of each other finally manage to utter that number 81 caught the pass.

And, it's hard enough to listen to someone who is intelligent wisecrack while some else is talking (Bob and Dan), it is unlistenable(sp?) to listen to people who aren't all that bright constantly quipping.

Or, is it that Dallas radio icon deal?
 
It's the radio icon deal. Because he was around for the glory days of 3 super bowls, Brad can now do no wrong.
But yeah, if you listen closely you realize that he's not near as good as everybody thinks he is.

But the phenomena is common around here. Look at how many people ran to smooch the tuchis of one Hal Jay. I'll agree Hal's jokes were funny. The first time we heard them 20 years ago. Now, on their 4th or 5th recyling, it's just old tired bits...

And that's where I'll give credit to KTCK. They've killed off the Coach Foolery's and Microphone Johnson's...it's about reinventing, not redoing...
 
Have to agree with this. The topic of allowing legend broadcasters retire long after they have lost their shtick is so true. The Brad and Dale team was fabulous, but that was what, ten years ago? I never cared much for Babe in the booth either.

The Ticket last week featured Brad on the "E-break of the week"...the part in the Buffalo game where Brad, in describing the pass to Owens that was dropped, said:
" Owens in the end zone, CAUGHT!......DROPPED!....incomplete....the Bills will win...."
Craig Miller was quick to point out that if indeed a ball is "caught" and "dropped" then that would be a fumble, clearly the pronouncement that the "..Bills will win..." was a little premature.
 
You should have heard Brad do "color " on some Frisco Roughrider games a year ago...stale,almost dead. Bill Mercer comes in to do color... and was SUPERB and Bill is in his mid 80's!! He still still sounds like "HE" was still doing the famed "Icebowl" game between the Packers and Cowboys in 1967. The man is ageless.
 
Have to agree with Bill Mercer. And to think, half of this town ONLY knows him as the "guy that interviewed the Von Erichs for years." ;D

Oh, and about being Hal Jay apologists and sycophants, not so much. At least for me, I was saying that they guy has earned it in this town. His schtick? Old and crusty. His memory? Fading like twilight. His legacy? Incontrovertible. All the aforementioned greats in this biz have lost game, and with the exception of a few (to borrow a word) "ageless" few like Mercer, Bagby, Chapman and Johnson, need to step out gracefully... but with loyalty being what it is on certain formats, who is going to be the PD known for firing that guy?!

Not everyone can pull a Jerry Jones and fire Tom Landry, and STILL get away with it. IJS ;)
