I was in San Diego today/a few radio observations

Well, I was down in what was supposed to be America's finest city. But some Chargers fans have me rethinking that thought.

Anyways, what is the deal all of a sudden with 5 stations(mabye 6 soon) playing regional mexican? Sure, 97.7, 99.7 and 106.5 have been doing it for a long time, but now there's both 95.3 and 105.7! And 99.3 will join the fray soon, which makes me wonder if someone will bail out. Probably Lynch, El Cucuy isn't really doing much and the music isn't anything different from what the other 4 would play

98.9 should be more Hurban. But as it stands, it's sounding like American Hip Hop.

100.7 is the best Jack I've heard so far. They'll play a classic dance track followed by a Supertramp song! It truly is variety unlike the 93.1 Jack.

I'm gonna be sad to see Cool go. I think this is actually the best oldies station I have heard(KOLA 99.9 comes in 2nd).


105.3 pissed me off. Running damn Chargers football broadcasts instead of rock. CC needs to put that mess on 600 or 1360.

96.5 is still quite soft as opposed to most ACs(KOST is pretty soft though)


That's what I got to hear. Didn't pay much attention to the other stations.

Kool 99.3 is probably the most traveled station on the FM dial. 94.1, 95.7, 99.3. (Remember Mix 95.7, it was a train wreck)

The Chargers signed a contract with KIOZ and they'll rock on the FM for the time being. Don't look for them to move to 600 or 1360. (KOGO-AM 600 has better ratings without baseball.)<P ID="signature">______________

I really like our Jack too. I just wish that once J&J move over to 94.1 that the PD didn't feel a need to put on another wacky morning team. At least your Jack up in LA plays music in the mornings.

Too bad to see Cool go. Loving the music mix along with the countdowns (at 7pm), themed sets (5pm), and all 70's (12 noon). People have said that San Diego is not an oldies town, but they did a very good job with those songs and a station like that could make it.

I still see CC as a part of the Walmartization of radio.

It is kind of interesting as CC chops up Latino station piece of the pie I cannot see them doing any better, in fact, I predict ad prices will become depressed further as the stations will undoubtedly undercut each other trying to get a piece of the ad pie. 99.3 will be competing against 103.7 and 106.5 who have established themselves in the market. They will also be going against La Prisa at 690, BOCA's La Pantera at 107.3.

Just as Wal-Mart has tried to take over the market with their bagillion number of stores and Chinese, after initially having now they are now on slippery ground (although they won't be going out of business anytime soon). (http://money.cnn.com/2005/08/16/news/fortune500/walmart/)

It's too bad that whenever a station gets too good in these times, it's usually the kiss of death on commercial radio. No hablo espanol, so adios 99.3!

Ah "people have to relaize that SD is not an oldies town" Says-
who? KCBQ-FM was successful in the late 80's..early 90's..
KBZT was very very successful in the early to mid 90's, then
did okay until Mike Bushey got a hold of the stick. I have
done the format in San Diego, San Francisco, and Atlanta and
I can tell you It can work..but it can't be done by rote. CC
especially has dificulty executing the format, it takes top
tier talent, great formatics, mega promotions, and a great
signal. I respect what Mason did with very little, but he
wasn't doing anything special here. Matter a fact his mix
contained way too much soft-pop rock (Association, Peter &
Gordon, etc.) which is simply not very vital music in 2005.
Look at KOOL-FM Phoenix, KOMA-FM Oklahoma CIty, and yes
even KRTH for leadership in the format.

I'll say it before David does.

Cool is a Mexican station which, instead of serving its COL (Tijuana), has been serving San Diego instead.

Now, to keep collins happy ... knock off the anti-Mexican remarks, or take them to the Off The Air board, or watch the owners of R-I dispose of you.<P ID="signature">______________

I cannot...

...look to KRTH for leadership in anything save annoyance. KRTH is even now reacting to trends in other markets, rather than leading the trends. They have gutted and stuffed an excellent airstaff, kissed off desireable high-TSL listeners, and in general insulted the intelligence of their core demographic with terrible formatic choices and poor programming.

Haven't heard the others lately, so I can't comment on those :)

This past weekend they focused on instrumental hits. (Go to the oldies board a few weeks ago for some examples of oldies hits that they played). It WAS Kool!

Sure you're not jealous because your beloved Raiders couldn't get on FM like the Chargers? There's nothing wrong with Chargers fans......and I think it's great they're on FM.
