One other reason for having a local host on WBZ-1030 in the overnight hours:
It should also be noted that in August, 2009, news of the death of Senator Ted Kennedy broke a bit after 1 A.M. EDT.
Had WBZ been running a syndicated show, they might have gotten a network bulletin, but that likely might have been that.
But since Steve LeVeille was doing a local show, the first bulletin (ironically, it was from ABC; I was actually listening to the show that night in bed before falling asleep) was followed by a look back at Kennedy's life (which was pre-taped, but locally produced by 'BZ). When that taped segment ended, LeVeille had Dan Rea on (Rea was in-studio; he had made it back to the 'BZ studios once news of Kennedy's death broke).
I suspect (I turned off my radio shortly after 2 A.M. EDT) that the rest of the night consisted of more discussion about Kennedy's life and times.
Had WBZ been running a syndicated show, they would have gotten a network bulletin (thanks to tripping an automation system), but might not have had much further coverage beyond hourly network newscasts until 5 A.M. EDT.
