If any station attempts R&B they should sound like WROU in Dayton

A sample hour on that station

1.Jill Scott-Gettin' in the way
2.Boyz II Men-More than you'll ever know
3.Melanie Fiona-It kills me
4.Jaheim-Just in case
5.Ledisi F-Stay together
6.Mary J. Blige-Family affair
7.Jagged Edge-Gotta Be
8.Rihanna-Only girl in the world
9.Eric Benet-Sometimes I cry
10.The Rude Boys-Written all over your face
11.Jamie Foxx-Blame it
12.Boyz II Men-End of the road

The reason I say this is because 98.9 had really low cume, and I think a big reason for that is they were going from Aaliyah to The S.O.S. Band. So nobody stayed tuned for a long time. This station just seems like it would keep a huge chunk of an R&B audience tuned in for a long time because it's not all over the R&B map. It seems like it's specifically aimed for a less aging R&B audience as well. Btw, I don't know what kind of cume this station has because Dayton doesn't have PPM, so I may be wrong.....who knows, but I like this station.

92.1 WROU is an amazing station. I'm friends with G. Adams and he definitely tries to keep the 18-34 R&B audience tuned in and not just the 25-54. It's more of a Urban-leaning Urban AC because Hot 1029 is more rhythmic and often avoids some of the urban r&b singles. It's one of Dayton's top stations and I recently heard it was the #1 Adult Contemporary station in Dayton.

Appears it's THE go-to station if you like Boyz II Men.  IMO their calls would be more memorable if they changed the last letter to O. ;)

Silliness aside (and my apologies for that), I've always wondered where the WROU calls came from. My guess was that maybe the RO is for the original owner's first name (Ronita), and that the U is for Urban. Anyone know? Maybe LJO since you're friends with the PD?

Stands for We Are Ohio's U-92, maybe Ronita had some say in that too. I do know my grandfather, the late, great Joe Woodford was PD or something of that nature back when it launched it 91 with Shanice - I Love Your Smile as the first song. I actually rode home from the hospital in the U-92 van! (Birthday: April 8, 1992)

That's pretty cool! Thanks.

Too bad we can't have a decent powered FM station with a format like Willie's Roadhouse on SiriusXM. Even on an HD channel would be nice. Only one I know of is not decent powered and is WBZI in Xenia.

U-92 was HUGE in Dayton when Ronita Hawes-Saunders owned the station...until Radio One came into town and ran RHS into bankruptcy by flipping 102.9 from Classic Rock "WING-FM" to Rhythmic CHR as "HOT 102.9"(Now the #2 station in the Dayton market)...and Radio One swooped in and bought 'ROU in '03 and flipped it to an Urban AC. 'ROU's studios were in Downtown Dayton until mid-'03 when they moved with the rest of the stations to 717 E. David Rd. in Kettering. I remember when they were actually building the 'ROU studio. I was doing stunts for the Z-93 "Morning Z"(Hosted by now-author of the hilarious radio book "Tales of a Washed Up Neverwas" Scott Mallory) show at the time and used to glance in at it when they were constructing it. 'ROU's studio is right next door to 'GTZ's studios (Now Adult Hits Fly 92.9). Radio One actually flipped the call letters to WRNB for a brief period before taking back the WROU calls. A little history lesson on WROU/WRNB/WROU 92.1.
