If I was the PD of TV LAND...I would...

I would air these shows...

Andy Griffith, Mayberry RFD, Sanford & Son, Good Times, All In The Family, Jeffersons, Dragnet ('60s), Adam 12, The Rookies, Archie Bunker's Place, Bonanza, Brady Bunch, BJ & The Bear, CHiPS, Leave It To Beaver, My Three Sons, Dennis The Menace, The Munsters, The Honeymooners (the real old ones, the 39 classic ones, all the revivals and the color ones) and more suggestions to come

I know this is a pipe dream because of rights issues. But we can dream, right?

TV Land as we know it is dead, it's a joke. Extreme Makeover Home Edition? (Also shown on CMT, by the way.) That's not a classic by anyone's definition. Face it, TVL is gone. Just as N@N died years ago.

Thank Viacom for running another channel into the ground by homogenization. But hey, there are posters out there who will disagree with me. Apparently, they feel that only "newer" shows are of value and the heck with anyone who cares to watch the classics.

So yea-rah-rah as Viacom ruins TVL, CMT and all of their other channels in the eternal quest for the same demo. As for the rest of us, I'm sure Homerjay and those of his ilk will tell us to pound salt and buy DVDs. We're not of value.

Yet no one can possibly convince me that their new lineup will garner more viewers than their lineup of 4 years ago. It goes against a basic maxim of business that when you have a market to yourself, you'll be more successful than by doing a half-hearted job of trying to be in the same market as dozens of competitors (as Viacom is now doing with the channel). That pie is getting sliced awfully thin.

To answer your question: If I were the PD of TVLand, given the corporate edits involved, I'd be honest and change the name to something else that removes any pretext that this channel resembles what it once was. How about CBS RealityWorld?

What's next? Reruns of Trading Spouses, just as they show on CMT.

If this is turning into another thread of criticizing TV Land then let me step in here but I don't believe in replacing crap (reality shows)
with more crap (sitcoms that weren't funny to begin with). Mayberry RFD? Everyone on the site pretty much agree that Andy Griffith jumped the shark on every color episode. Every episode after Don Knotts left should be burned. Mayberry RFD was not funny in any way and was not entertaining. It has never done well in syndication. It was just boring. Aunt Bee, Howard, Emmit, & Goober were NOT funny. Plus it is just sad to watch Floyd after he had his stroke and watch him deteriorate with cancer. Why should TV Land waste money on such fare? Green Acres- now that's funny!

There is, also, a problem in acquiring programing. Unless, things have changed, you usually can't buy one program from a distributor without buying some turkeys to go with it. Case in point- Barney Miller. I know, at least up to recently, you could not just buy the rights to Barney Miller from Sony- Screen Gems. You had to take such shows as Charlie's Angels, The Love Boat, and Fantasy Island along with it. None of which have done anything in reruns. You can not buy Bewitched without buying I Dream of Jeanie. You could not buy Dobie Gillis without taking The Patty Duke Show - I don't know if that is still true.

Another problem is acquiring programs that have not been burned out on other channels. Up until recently Scrubs was on at least three channels on my 85 channel cable system. Cosby is another one. It is, and has been all over the dial. I can understand the purchase of Third Rock. I was wondering what happened to that show. I know it hasn't been around for a couple years. Maybe News Radio would work, too. I think Hogan's Heroes was a good buy. It disappeared several years ago and has always done well in reruns. I think if Paramount would rest Cheers for a few years it would be successful again. A lot of shows are like that. Let them rest for a while then bring them back.
As far as watching reruns go, I wish I got RTN. I like Hill Street Blues, St Elsewhere, and L. A. Law (and WKRP & Newhart -but they are on WGN, which I get). Seems like it maybe time to bring back NYPD Blue soon, too. But, I do agree TV Land overall is just going in the wrong direction. These make over shows just don't belong on TV Land, or as far as I'm concerned, anywhere.
The point of this whole rant is TV Land just doesn't care what you or I care about their programing. They are very arrogant and not open to any suggestions from any of us.

Never was -- Fox produced and owns Dobie Gillis, while MGM owns Patty Duke (it was a United Artists program).

True, but for some reason they were distributed together as a package. Don't know how it came about.

I would love to see the Paul Henning trilogy (Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and Green Acres) aired in chronological order so we would once again have the interplay among characters as it happened back in the late 60's. Basically treat the 3 shows as one show for the first time in 40 years. Our local station (WHAS) did this back in the 70s by airing B.H. at 10:30 a.m. and P.J. and G. Acres at 4 and 4:30pm, and when the Clampetts went home, the station would air the shows in order. There would be a jump in the PJ and GA shows, but it was fun to see the interplay between the characters in the shows.

Im sorry but the colour ones of this show (OR ANY BLACK AND WHITE PROGRAM) utterly suck and are a disrespect to the show!!

Yeah, and some folks wouldn't believe the world is round, the earth revolved around the sun, etc. Ratings are what they are. Subjectively like or hate the programming, but objectively, the new approach is garnering more viewers.

I don't think Springfieldrad was talking about colorized episodes of the 50s Honeymooners. Since he said it in the same sentences as "the revivals" - he was probably referring to the Honeymooners segments from the Jackie Gleason Show in the late 60s and 1970. They were shot in color.

Color aside, they were truly inferior to the originals - the pacing seemed off - Sheila MacRae played Alice. No disrespect intended, but she was no Audrey Meadows. The chemistry between Ralph and Alice was missing. Also, they played around with the format too much. They even did some musical segments. Not good.
