WMMR and WXTU, their highest books in 20 years, both nicely over a 5.0, making them 4th and 5th in the market, this is big news, the whole radio world is talking about it. The Rap/HipHop stations in this market continue to drop like a rock. These two stations rise, is due to listeners, tired of that type of sound, so they are going to the two stations that are the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of that music. Now will someone with half a brain, flip one of the many failures to Active, 24/7/365, MMR is up with a half-***** approach to the format, can one only imagine how high a station doing it right can go. To all the critics, ROCK IS FAR FROM DEAD...

I agree!!! I have been saying it for months now, YSP is in deep trouble, they should either drop talk or do it full time and sink, they made a big mistake dropping music for this on dayparts. Rock music is on the rise once again, its time this city has its full time Hard Rocker. I think by Labor Day we might just see that happen, a little birdie told me so.... ::)
There is too much Rhythmic style, on the dial.

Can't argue too much with those ratings... I share your frustration for another Y-100 type of station, but I would not say that rap/r&b have no place.... they just service a different audience.... by the fact that you are wanting an active rock station you probably fall in the male 18-34 demo, but might fall 25-54... I'm betting your in the first though..... you should want that music... now, if you were P12-18, or W12-34 you would want rap / top 40..... anyway... I agree... Philly did a 180 from being too much rock, to almost none.... it sucks... I have Sirius, and I understand there probably is no place for that here... but a couple of years back I knew it was my time to bail on the radio...

Holy 5.3. I can't believe MMR got that. Seems like only yesterday everyone onhere was bashing greater media for tweaking, and not knowing what to do with station.

As for rap, there are really only 2 all rap stations. Which one would flip. Power99 has been rap since the 80's, and the beat is owned by radio one. The other mostly rap stations like Q102, and wiried have already been adding more rock to their sound. So really, if anything these ratings should cause Q102 to switcvh from being 80% rap / 20% rock to 80% rock / 20% rap.

Also, is this just a Phily thing, or is rap down everywhere?

YSP *was* in deep trouble. They had a decent bounce in this book from the dismal Winter book.

They still are in trouble, but it's not as dire as it was before.

YSP's music have been going down since Spike left. They were ok before but now it is the same 15 artist all the time. I did like the music they played over the 4th weekend. So they have tons of artist and tracks they just don't play them.

Do you have to actually subscribe to a service to find out the ratings breakdowns? I can always find the overall trends, but I'd love to know exactly how close the race was for certain parts of the day. Is there anyway the general public can find out this information?

In the spring Arbitron ratings, released yesterday, 'MMR tied longtime leader WDAS-FM (105.3) for first place among listeners in the ad-friendly 25-to-54 group. Fifteen months ago, 'MMR was 12th.

So does greater media deserve some kudos from the people on this board (and the other board) for the years getting bashed as idiots (on the old board) who didn't know how to run a station? Or does all credit goto P&S, end of Y100, Howard Stern, and YSP change to talk? Which if so meaning MMR is just benefiting from good timing, and any real competition will knock them back down towards the bottom half of ratings?

Fantastic assumption, all of what you said, from P&S, to the demise of Y-100, to YSP yakking, all played their part on the MMR upheavel. The rock audiance had nowhere to go, MMR really is not much different than they have been for decades, the music is a bit harder, but the presentation is the same stale delivery. I have been listening to them just out of process of elimination, I think they sounded best when Milkman was there, music wise. They have this MMR archives thing they do, but the music they use was never played on the old MMR, which was always a soft Rocker for many years, these cuts are hard. Believe me, if someone came on the scene and did Active 24/7/365, you would see MMR drop back down to 3.0. But then again, with Rock music on the upswing, this market could probably support a full time Rocker and MMR's pouporri of talk, Pierre telling us about his personal life for hours and uninformative jargon, Cord, Kotz and the weekenders are a welcome relief. Many people left YSP when they went to FREE-FM and find it hard to go back for the music segments, so YSP dug their own grave.
