If you run the Boston radio dial, what would it be like?

Wouldn't you love to hear Jerry's commentary on this campaign? I remember during the Watergate era, as new revelations emerged he would open his program with the phrase, "Well . . . another shoe has dropped!"

How 'bout bringing back the likes of Gus Saunders
Oh, wow. My mother used to listen to him.
Caller: "One cup of sugar."

Gus: "One............................. cup..................................... sugar..."

Caller: "Two tablespoons of vegetable shortening."

Gus: "Two............................... tablespoons..................................................................... shortening..."
Riveting! ;)

Problem is "thumping noises" have been the essence of pop music for at least 15 years now and that's what a lot of 18-34s still want to hear. It's a dumbed-down, rhythmic world out there, and we fuddy-duddies who long for "listenable music" with melody ain't part of it -- nor are we wanted by advertisers.

The older we get, the closer the mutual opinions of ourselves and the advertisers get.

The dialogue you mention was more likely from his stint on "The Louise Morgan Show" on (then) WNAC-TV Channel 7....
IIRC....he had a MUCH better RADIO news delivery.....;)

It was on his whatever-Kitchen show. People would call in with a recipe and he'd read each line back, slowly, as he wrote it down by hand.

Don't you mean, "The older we get, the further the mutual opinions of ourselves and the advertisers get"?

If that's not what you meant, then I'm confused.

No, I meant we the listeners don't want the advertisers, and as we get older, the advertisers want us less and less.

OK, thanks for taking the time to clarify.

Actually, I find some of the ads on radio to be clever and amusing; e.g., Geico, Progressive come to mind. I would like to see a moratorium on ads for weight reduction, hair growth, super foods, and, of course, male enhancement.

But you are correct that the advertisers want the 55+ less and less, and 65+ not at all.

Are we not including Nielsen numbers? Net loss? Revenue? Because if I were to run the Boston dial, I would run it based on what makes money and what doesn't. Not what sounds good to me because I like that particular format and have never worked in the industry.

So, if losing money and demographics and all the basic elements in building a successful station weren't a factor. I'd flip 92.5 to Country. The branding would be "the Moose." Think Classic Country and Modern Country with a harder edge (Think Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell and Kacey Musgraves), I'd also flip Kiss 108 to Modern Triple-A. Call it "107.9 the Mystic." And maybe I'd flip 97.7. to Urban AC. Call it 97.7 WBCS. "Boston's Cultural Station." But then again, for those things to happen, you'd have to have done studies, have formed a radio group to buy out these stations and flip them, then there are demographics (Boston isn't exactly ground zero for Urban AC, no matter how much people like to kick and scream).

Deregulation sucks. Personally, I'd love to form the "617 Media Group, LLC" (my ideal radio group) and buy out these stations and flip the formats to my liking. But let's face facts. Boston isn't the most exciting market right now. But the way things are as it stands, is all good. All of the stations in the book are making money. Unless you think otherwise, then come up with a proposal and buy out one of these stations if you're so hot to flip AMP 103.3 back to Oldies (P.S. Oldies is an ever evolving format and it's not all Motown and Wall of Sound).

Bob Bitner also has the 101.3 repeater on-deck for 2017! Once they find the Big City Pirates and get them out of the way, then you guys will be able to bear Solid Gold Oldies on 740 AM and 101.3 FM. I'm not sure what else people want?

Boy...are you the skunk at the garden party! ;-) LOL

So, you would run all foreign language leased programming if it was proven to make the most money?

If I had at least a couple of hundred thousand dollars tied up in a station, plus monthly obligations for rent, salaries, FICA, utilities, insurance and more, I'd look for a sure way to be profitable.

With many AMs that do not cover their entire market anymore due to noise levels, urban sprawl and the like, I might find a station for sale that did cover a particular ethnic neighborhood and then figure out how to appeal to that group; foreign language would then be both a community service and a chance to make some good radio as a "local station" for the group I would serve.

There is only one Bob Bitner, whose skills i the area of practical altruism are recognized and admired in the industry. The rest of us have to do whatever it takes to make the many inferior AM stations in every market profitable.

I am known to be a killjoy ;-)

Also, I think that you missed my original point. I never would want to run all foreign language on a personal level. But as Mr. Eduardo said, if I had the money and there was a market for it, I'd find a way to make it work.

Unless you are putting up your own money, 100% of what it takes to run the place, you have a responsibility to investors and shareholders to maximize the R.O.I. and value of the investment.

If you are Bob Bittner, you can do as you please as you only have to answer to yourself, and God knows WJIB could be making money hand over fist as a leased time ethnic that close to Boston.

If we are talking hypothetical, we could put the audio of chimps fornicating on a station if we wanted to, if someone else was paying the electric bill, tower lease, etc etc etc.
