iHeartMedia Houston announces a continuation of its long-term partnership with the Houston Astros to keep Sports KBME-AM (Sportstalk 790 AM) Houston as the home of the Houston Astros. Astros fans will continue to hear all regular and post season games, and pre-game, post-game as well as all other Astros' related programming on Sportstalk 790 AM. In addition, all games will broadcast on KTBZ-FM-HD2 and many of the games will be simulcast on KTRH-AM KODA-FM-HD2.

"Sports Talk 790 will continue as the radio flagship station, and we are proud to be simulcasting games on KTRH 740 AM, one of the most powerful radio stations in America. Also KTRH is included in the Astros deal.
 
This is great news! The most popular Houston sports team is on the most powerful Houston radio station. Makes sense. Reid Ryan deserves a lot of credit for making this happen. The Astros were on KTRH from 1999-2012. Great to have them back and it’s great that Astros fans who live north, West, and Southwest of the metro area will have a clear Station at night in which to listen. Go ‘Stros!
 
Just stumbled onto a lengthy thread from a few years ago discussing Astros' radio at length. It got needlessly contentious at times, but one thing I was in favor of that many in that thread were not was games returning to KTRH in some capacity. Guess it wasn't such a bad idea after all! Especially given the revelation by Reid Ryan in the Chronicle article that the Astros had wanted to bring 740 back into the fold for a while.

How bad the idea is remains to be seen.

The deal iHeart put together should have a minimal impact on KTRH's ratings, since the Astros will not interrupt the cash cow shows that are the reason people listen to KTRH. What I read says they won't be preempting Michael Berry to air the Astros. I'd guess they probably won't preempt Rush either.

If iHeart had the option to leave the Astros on KBME only AND retain their flagship status with the Astros, I'm sure they would have. If I had to guess, some other station was courting the Astros, and iHeart had to play this card to retain them.
