iHeartMedia Initiates Round Of Cuts Across The Country

I’m more concerned if iHeart will blowout more of the longtime WBZ newsroom employees during this round of layoffs.

Will K000000nah survive, or will the forces of evil succeed in silencing his voice of reason on the Boston airwaves?

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode bat-fans.... same bat-time, same bat-channel!
But but but, he'll be going national any second now baaaaaaybeeeeee, honest, he will!

Jeff is very successful hosting mornings on the 7th most listened to station with Boston’s 6+ audience. On a AM station! He continues to engage his loyal audience and does very well in supporting his advertisers. He is not going to be laid off because he is performing well for the audience WRKO attracts. Live and local is what Boston listeners want in morning drive time.

Sure, nod nod, wink wink and "because he is performing well for the audience WRKO attracts" doesn't say much for RKO does it.

How does it do in billing?
There are 3 non-coms in the top 20, so ratings and revenue rank differently. WRKO is around 13th in billing.

RadioInsight is reporting, “The layoffs across the country at iHeartMedia are still ongoing.”

My theory about this is they need to cut the payroll, but they still need the work done. Lance says some are regional production people. What they've done in the past is make agreements with some people to leave the payroll, but do contract work instead. That way the company gets the work done, but it's paid from a different budget.

Will this round take the place of the usual annual "Grinch" layoff wave in late November, after the 2023 budget is set? Or is this just a hint of a huge bloodletting to come? Is the decision all up to Wall Street?

I think it's up to the local economy, as to how long the ad budgets stay where they are. Since a lot of holiday shopping is now done online, we probably won't see a 4th quarter improvement.

BTW I don't expect this will be limited to iHeart. I'm hearing some rustling going on at other radio companies for the same reason.

Depends on how the economy is doing and whether automotive comes back before Q4. That quarter is always the final determination on where a company needs to be starting the new year.

Here are more cuts at Iheart.
