I'm doing a favor for Weird Al - related to WPRO News story this morning

Weird Al Yankovic has been refused permission to release a spoof comedy version of the hit James Blunt single 'You're Beautiful'. This just in from Blunt's manager: Thanks for your email, but both James and I will never approve this parody to be released on any label

The main reason I'm posting this is because I heard the story broadcast on WPRO News this morning and it just so happens I have the song. So since the suits won't allow it to be released on any label I'm going to post it here for all those who may want to hear it. Enjoy. ;D

I'm confused. Weird Al's version "You're pitiful" was out years ago.
Second, I thought parody and satire were covered under Fair Use laws. As I understand it (and I could be wrong here) as long as the proper royalties are paid you don't need permission to release a parody song.

Here's the short version. Weird Al wanted to release the song in 2006. Blunt gave his Ok. But the record company said No. Now Weird Al wants to include it as the first single off an upcoming compilation CD. But he's upset because the record company is still saying No and they now claim Blunt says No as well. He thinks it's just the record company being A-holes. Under law Al can still release the song. But he just isn't allowed to profit off it like he had hoped. So he has been posting the song all over the internet as a way to stick it to the record company for being a bunch of jerkoffs with no sense of humor.

The whole complete story is on Wikipedia. I got the link from Al the other day when he was bitching about them still not letting him put it on his album. He's not happy. He said he never had this problem with anybody before. The only remotely similar case was when Michael Jackson didn't want him to parody Black and White. But Michael was fine with all the other parodies. So Al always respected Michael for having a sense of humor.

Out of curiosity, when Weird Al parodies a song, does he share songwriting credits with the original writers?
If I wrote music, I'd be flattered if he wanted to parody one of my songs.
Of course, if my aunt had wheels she'd be a wagon.

LAst week Al said that he actually shares songwriting credits with Michael Jackson and he thought that was cool. So to answer your question... YES.
