I am working weekend and swing shifts for both Rhythmic WHZT-FM and Urban Hits WJMZ-FM. I have been here since November with former stops in West Palm Beach (CBS RADIO's X1023 and B1063 respectively) in 2006 and Wilmington, Delaware (QC Communication's WJKS-FM Urban).

My question is why are there two country co-owned stations (similar to Clear Channel's co-owned rhytmic San-Francisco pair). They work here and I have listened and they sound similar.

thoughts?
 
Both WESC and Wissle 100 have been doing country, wikipedia claims that WESC-fm has been doing country its whole life since 1948 starting off as an simlucast of am 66 WESC. AM 660 ditched country in 2000 leaving 92.5 the heritage country station in Greenville-Spartanburg. Should CC kill off this FM country signal with its very high ratings. Wikipedia says that WESC is more classic leaning than its current driven sister station WSSL.

Wissle 100 was launched in 1981 when the signal was upgraded to put a big signal across the upstate. Both stations have a long history of being competitors before cc bought both of them. Country is just too popular in the upstate to try to break up the combo and open up for someone else to go country. Don't forget that CC's Kiss Country covers the area well from Asheville.

No fault of your's JJ, but the two Country stations are not similar. WESC is the heritage that is 90's and Legends driven and sister wssl is current and recurrent based with some gold. they cover both ends in my opinion.
 
WSSL positions itself as "Today's Hot New Country," while WESC is "Carolina's Best Country and Your All Time Favorites." So the same owner but slightly different formats.

Actually, WESC-FM had a beautiful music format for a number of years, well into the 70's. To be absolutely correct, I think the FM did simulcast the AM ("The Famous Six-Sixty In Dixie") from 5PM 'till sign-off at sunset, and then continued with country until 8AM the next morning. The FM was programmed for in-office listening during working hours, when it was believed that only background music could be piped into businesses.

Just kidding.... Glad to hear new talent moving into this area.....
