Im offended by BUSTED BABY lyrics, but not FLO RIDA.....

The censors just dont make any sense sometimes.... I may be old fashioned but offended by the lyrics of Plies-Busted Baby... The part where it goes (I just gave her a nic name its WET WET, cause when we finish she messed up all my bed sets.... How did these Crude, Gross, Sexual Lyrics get passed the censor's,,, I cringe everytime I have to play it, and I hate it when little 9 yr old girls call up and request it, I just dont understand why this wasnt edited and cleaned up for radio. This is just very offensive and embaressing for me to play, and we have had complaints about it...

On the other hand, a perfectly clean party song that shouldnt be edited, does get edited. Im talking about Flo Rida-In the Ayer...... Editing out the word Damn, which isnt even considered a curse word by todays standards. The part where it says Oh Hot Damn, this is my Jam gets edited to OH HOT.... This is my Jam, that completely ruins the flow of the song, doesnt even Rhyme, and shouldnt be edited. Why does this song get edited, yet Busted Babt doesnt.

Also, im totally sick of Lil Wayne-Lollipop, I take my headphones off everytime I have to play it,,, I just cant stand the sound of his annoying voice, and Im totally put off by the message in this song,,, Its about Oral Sex.... Ya wanna lick the Rapper=Not Funny.... I also hate when little girls call in to request it, do their parents even realize what their kids listen to now days, these kind of songs where intended for an over 18 audience in the privacy of their own home, not for the public airwaves... At first this song was dayparted only after 6 pm so it wouldnt come on in the office and make us lose at work listeners, but thats kinda hard to do after the song blows up....

Any other opinions on this, or am I just a midwestern conservative stick in the mudd that should be at a Hot AC???????? Am I over reacting, or do others feel the same way... It just baffles me that we cant say Damn, but all these Sexual Crude Messages are just fine.....

Most stations take out that part of "Bust It Baby". I haven't heard a station that has played the word "lick" in "Lollipop" either.

Your job isn't to judge - it's to play the hits. The market will define what it deems as too controversial, and your PD will decide what to censor ahead of time or not.

In the ghetto

When I think of a gritty inner city, I immediately think of Marshall, MN. Their CHR pumps out hard core rap in the middle of the day to relate to their audience. Keep cranking that Swing by Savage on the top 9 at 9

What ever happened to dayparting after Y2K??

Speaking of which, does anyone know of any anti gay groups that have complained about Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl?

About silly censoring, I remember in 2002 when Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 had Picture by Kid Rock and Hey Ma by some rapper (forgot name). In Hey Ma, Rick Dees had the word "I smoke" edited out. So it went "I ------, me too, oh good". Yet, in the Kid Rock Picture song, the countdown left the "Fueling up on cocane and whiskey" part of the lyrics unedited. It was really weird.

About little kids calling for a dirty song, I remember when a 12 year old girl called John Garribedian on Open House Party and requested Salt Shaker by Lil John. John sounded very suprised in his tone. He was probably thinking "Does this girl even understand what she is requesting?" I read on a message board about a local geology student doing field work on Little River Canyon. She heard 2 10 year olds singing 50 Cent's Candy Shop. She was very horrified to say the least.

I think WZYP is probably the only top 40 in the country that hasn't played Lollypop, and I don't mind one bit. The Deal or no Deal music is annoying and so are the lyrics. It's almost as bad as Don't Cha.

Chrles,,, Your right, it is our job to play the hits regarless our personal preference,,,, Chrles I am working my way to APD,,, Im already on air,, I started off as just a board opp,,, and they do take me suggestions for Adds, especially Dance and Modern Rock adds...

Anyway,,, It isnt up to me, or even the PD to decide what gets sensored... Our makes that decision, everything has to be listened to and approved by the GM.

I just cant get over why Damn is edited,,, Does anyone remember back in 1992, there was a song called Damn I wish I was your Lover byt Sophie B Hawkins,,, this is 16 years later, havent we advanced past that... However, I found out that this was just the first Radio Edit from the label we received, so I guess alot of stations play this edit.

If I bring up the Busted Baby lyrics to the GM, Im sure he would probably look into it, We are supposed to address listener offended complaints to him, and we have had a few... Also, if there is some kind of cursing that the Label issued as the radio edit anyway, or something he missed, he wants to know about it.

Dude almost every song on the radio can be considered offensive by older standards, but the fact of the matter is that 12-year olds know a lot more about the songs they're requesting then you might think. My mom was a kindergarten teacher and some of the stuff that her 5-YEAR OLDS would say blew me away. I, on the other hand, had to look up Urban Dictionary to find out what a Bust It Baby was ;D

It's just the way society is right now. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but who are we in radio to determine that?

Neither song bothers me personally, and I think you are definately overreacting. Like it or not, the world is different now than it was 20, or even 10 years. Personally, when I was younger, I always HATED CHR stations that heavily edited and dayparted songs, and now that I'm 38 and have a 15 year old, guess what; I still feel the same. But then again, I am, and always have been, very much a liberal. (and I'm from the South, where that's considered even worse than in the midwest :)

And as far as dayparting goes; man, am I glad that a lot of CHR's have done away with that ridiculus practice. Maybe it made sense 20 years ago when there weren't as many stations and the CHR's were also the default Hot AC's. And also back then, there was a definate age line that divided those who liked rap and those who detested it. But nowadays, most markets have Hot AC's to serve the upper end of the demo, and also, now, even the people in the upper end of the CHR demo and beyond grew up with hip hop so it's not an instant turn off for them as it is for the now over 50 crowd.

Anyway, on a funny side note, since you mentioned "Lollipop" being inappropriate for kids; my 15 year old son and I were goofing off on a recent vacation by continually saying "yeah, I like Dat" in the funny tone from the song for everything. Anyway, I've never censored what he can listen to (and personally don't believe in it). It's much better to be open about everything and to talk about it, than to make something so "taboo" and forbidden. (But then again, as I said, I am a liberal and don't consider that a bad thing:)

I'm very conservative, and the lyrics don't bother me. If there were parents or listeners or advertisers lining up at the door complaining, that'd be one thing - but we play these songs, and that's not the case... I think if it was that big of a deal, more effort would be made on the part of the record companies to edit these songs more before their release to radio.

I do not understand anyone being 'offended' by a song. It is art. (and no, don't be all whiney and go 'omg, rap is not art!'... just because you don't like it, it is self expression for the artist... hence the name "artist")

Does anyone get offended by a sculpted penis on a Greek statue? "OMG, my 9 year old saw that statue, take it away!"...

Nice try, but way different. If that Green statue was shown "Supermanning that Ho," then you'd be offended too.

>>>>>>> CHRles wrote... Your job isn't to judge - it's to play the hits. The market will define what it deems as too controversial, and your PD will decide what to censor ahead of time or not.

Why can't he judge? If he's not the PD then he doesn't have the final say. But I've heard of PDs who don't even listen to a song and just add it because of chart position... or because all the kids are calling for it... whatever. So you're suggesting they should play EVERY dirty song and let the market decide? Great... piss off everyone and then say... "Sorry, guess we just had to find the line." Great idea.

Nah, I wouldn't be offended. I'd offer a generous wad of cash to be able to display it in my livingroom.

ps. Greek, not "Green"... dang activists getting in my head.

Its funny you should mention I Kissed a Girl..... Im not at all offended by that song,, Though I may lean on the conservative side, I dont see anything wrong with girls being Bi Curious =, and in fact I support gay rights very heavily.. The song is really quite harmless, its about kissing, not oral sex.... Our audience loves I kissed a girl,,, Ive only had one complaint call about it, and that was from my friend Jamie, so I dont really count calls from people I know personally. We cant pull a hot song from rotation just because one listener was offended....

We recieved six complaints about it... and since each complaint equals one billion people, then SIX BILLION PEOPLE WERE OFFENDED!

Seriously.. I Kissed a Girl is already in A on my station, and I'm a Hot AC. It's a catchy as hell track. Sure there may be some people put off by it... but at the beginning of EVERY song... someone will tune out. Remember that.

I find it REALLY ironic though that Katy Perry is the daughter of two pastors, and she put out a Christian album!

Similarly, "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks was a major hit left unedited, while some stations would edit out the word bitch when mentioned several times in Pink "Just Like A Pill" as well as a few other songs. Perhaps, when it is not part of the title, it is not considered to be an essential part of the song?

This isn't the first time a song called "I Kissed A Girl" hit the airwaves. Anybody else remember this song from Jill Sobule in 1995?

While it didn't get near as much airplay as Katy Perry, it did get some limited airplay from some small market and modern rock leaning CHRs.

Yeah, I've still got the Jill Sobule CD that the track was from and I have it loaded into one of my playlists on my iPod. It wasn't a big CHR hit, but did receive a pretty good amount of airplay on alternative stations. I like both songs, but I actually like the Jill Sobule track better than the Katy Perry one. It is funnier and more playful and I always thought it should have been a bigger hit than it was. I guess it might have been a few years ahead of its time in what the public would accept.
