Impending demise of SportsMap 94.1

Looks like enough has been said on the Charlie Pallilo show that we can be pretty certain that SportsMap 94.1 is coming to an end. Pallilo today said that things would be “wrapping up in the next week and a half.” So it appears that January 31 or February 1 will be the swan song for the format.

SportsMap 94.1 was the programming continuation of the old 1560 The Game, although most of the local shows had been moved to a simulcast on 97.5. No indication of changes coming to 97.5.

Odd that Gow’s own SB Nation Radio might not have any clearance in its home market, unless Gow has something else up its sleeve.

No rumblings about any changes to KGOW 1560, which has been running a Vietnamese language format the past 16 months.

Any guesses as to what might appear on 94.1 after February 1 ?

I’m going to predict a Tejano format choice for mrtejano. :)

Haha you’re funny, I’m not a huge Tejano fan. My username is based on me being proud of being from Texas and also being Hispanic. Has nothing to do with Tejano Music just like Go Tejano day on the Rodeo has nothing to do with Tejano Music.

But back to the real subject, if they stop leasing the Translator I’m predicting either an Asian format. Maybe 103.5 moves to 94.1 or Centro brings back La Mejor to 94.1 or La Nueva.

Charlie Pallilo today confirmed that Thursday, January 31 is the last day for SportsMap 94.1. He mentioned that with “the upgrade of the 97.5 signal” 94.1 was no longer needed and that Gow Media resources could be better used elsewhere. He did joke that “if you hear a Korean cooking show this Friday” on 94.1 you should retune to 97.5. Not sure if that was a hint of future programming.

I guess the reference to an upgraded 97.5 signal must mean that the booster transmitter is on the air. I haven’t noticed any difference in the Cy-Fair area other than the muddy audio issues, discussed on the other thread.

I guess Friday morning we’ll all find out what is next for 94.1.

As stated by many on the "ESPN Radio Booster" thread, a 2KW booster that cannot penetrate beyond the current western boundary of FM 97.5 is not likely to cure much in Sugar Land, Katy, or Tomball. I wish Gow Media the best on this booster experiment, but abandoning FM 94.1 SportsMap, which does an OK job in downtown, sounds a lot more like a money problem, otherwise they'd be expanding by leasing KYND; oh yeh, Gow used to have sports on 50KW K-GOW AM 1560 and elected to transfer to a 99 watt mosquito-signal - but now that's going away. (Thanx to BamaTX for the mosquito reference)
