In case there was any question that today's the day for B101.1's Christmas flip...

They already took the '80s library off the HD2 (hopefully forever--it's so boring).

So I guess they do realize they have an HD2 channel.

9 am and it’s underway.

Starting with Springsteen this year. Hell is freezing over.

And a TOH jingle for the legal ID. Can’t say I recall that having happened in a long time.

9 am and it’s underway.

I like their new top of the hour ID. Not the smoothest transition though, was it? haha. This is the first time I can remember that they didn't kick off with "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year."

EDIT: As I was responding to you, you edited your post to say pretty much what I was typing. haha. Happy Holidays!

agree the transition was a bit rough, as was two of their other holiday jingles (ha) back to back. Not god-awful, but a bit off. I feel like the TOH could use a little more “something” when it will stand alone. We’ll see how it all comes together.

Those meaningless quibbles aside, the overall montage seemed fairly typical and perfectly enjoyable.

Now the other stations in town can hang out the “gone fishing” sign for six weeks. (I kid, I kid.)

If you want to see an entire studio full of B101.1 employees reacting to dead air at their most anticipated moment of the year, they were doing a live video stream and it's posted on Facebook.

Very fun. Good way to get additional mileage out of it.
Now, this is not something I generally notice (more like white noise to me at this point), but what’s up with the song tags? Having the male voice reappear at Christmas isn’t brand new, but I’m noticing a mix of three, including what sounds like a new female voice.

I noticed that too. It made me wonder if songs were added this year that aren't usually played but, in the time I was listening, I don't recall hearing anything out of the ordinary. Seems odd that the tags would be changed for songs that were there in previous years.

Speaking of songs they may not have played before: I didn't hear this but their website says that at 1pm, they played "Santa Claus Is Comin To Town" by Justin Bieber, a truly sickening little bit of bile from like 8 years ago. If correct, I have to ask: "Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?!"

Yeah, I heard the new female voice on a U2 tune I know with near certainty they’ve played for years. I recall some years ago, the male
voice was used for all holiday song tags, then back to the normal ones come December 26.

Now that I hear the TOH jingle without the montage....eh, it feels weirdly rushed. I like it conceptually as a change of pace, but it could use a bit more spacing between the first and second parts. Just my unwelcome unsolicited opinion.

When they first re-adopted the "B" name, it seemed like they just played the same jingle over and over again ("Philly's B one-oh-one point-oooooone") and I felt the same way about that one. Why were they cramming "Philly's" in there? We maybe needed to adjust to the station being called "B" again...but we didn't need to be told where we were!

But regarding this TOH: I don't know why but I've always liked any imaging that ends with that extended "A" ("Philadelphiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!") I get why this was put together the way it was since the "legal" thing is calls followed by city of license but............does anyone really care about that anymore? If they (somehow) sang "WBEB is B101.1, Philadelphia's Official Christmas Music Station," I have a feeling no one would end up in prison.

No one but the most, ummmm, uptight people care. I’d prefer some variation of the Philadelphia’s Christmas Station jingle with the spoken letters/CoL they served for the ToH, since it’s not like the use the letters outside of that. Might have offered some additional creative options.

I’ll praise the Breeze here (Davey, that OK?)—personal issues with the voice aside, I think their ToH is pretty solid.

I can't for the life of me think of what 106.1's TOH sounds like. After the first month or two, I stopped checking in with them. I really only hear them when I'm in an Uber. Uber drivers seem to love that station! I dislike almost everything about it (sorry, "Dave"). They occasionally play a chestnut I like but since it's practically surrounded on both sides by Journey (yes, "Dave," that's an exaggeration), I don't think it's worth it. The whole station just sounds flat to me. I understand "relaxing" but flat is something different. Fortunately, my Uber trips are never longer than 30 or 40 minutes. And if it's during Delilah's show, I just walk instead. Too risky!

I think it just came to me after hearing it again, what I’m not liking about the ToH jingle. The WBEB part sounds like the end, going down. Then the sung Philadelphia sounds like it’s just tacked on. I know how silly it sounds, but conceptually I think if the final B was going up and there was an extra beat before Philadelpha it would flow much better.

We're radio geeks. We have special dispensation to think things like this are important. CHANGE APPROVED!

Not prison, but I have a feeling fines would be a distinct possibility, especially if WBEB kept doing it the wrong way for a month and a half. The only times I ever hear any station up this way break the ID rules, it's usually some once-every-two-weeks specialty host on a college or community station -- WESU Middletown and WPKN Bridgeport come to mind. If the FCC is now letting improper IDs slide, you'd think some commercial stations would be tinkering with theirs the way you want WBEB to do, right?

Unless one has a stick that needs surgical removal from one’s nether regions, should what follows Philadelphia matter one iota? I’d like to think there are more important things in this world.

I don't "want" them to do their ID in any order. I don't really care how they do it. I guess some people really do though.
