In Memory of Harry Kalas (2009-10 NFL Season)

I was wondering if The National Football League plans a season-long tribute to its longtime voice, who died in April while calling the plays at a Phillies game in Washington? I think the initials HK would be plastered on each team's helmets, and Kalas was very synonomous with The Phils & The NFL for many generations, and it would be a fitting tribute for a man who brought us true character to the highlight reel.

The Phils have had HK on their uniforms all season. Us Phillies fans have felt a real loss this season. I can't see it happening on NFL uniforms though, somehow. It would be nice if there was some fitting tribute though.

I'm sure Inside the NFL on Showtime will do a very fitting tribute to him. They honored him quite a bit during one episode back in 2007. It was actually a behind-the-scenes interview of him as he was preparing for his radio call of a Giants game for Westwood One.

I wonder who'll get to replace Kalas as narrator on Inside...

I think Bill Ratner would be a great voice to The NFL. I see the characterstics of both Kalas & Facenda inside of him. He does mostly narration work for several documentaries for The History Channel, A&E, Discovery, NatGeo, The Weather Channel, et.al. His voice can also be heard on many TV stations like KHOU, WCVB, WBBM and many others, as well as commercials (Old Navy, Sprint) and Movie Promos/Trailers. Great Voice Indeed.

True, but he was more of a voice for the Philadelphia Phillies in MLB than he was for NFL Films.

That said, I can't imagine the NFL NOT honoring him in some form during Kickoff Weekend since it's too late for HOF weekend. Perhaps they'll have NFL Network do a piece to the broadcast on the last NFL Total Access before the season opens (Which would be the night of the first game) which the other networks would rebroadcast either during the pre-game or halftime show throughout the entire weekend.

I can also see MLB rebroadcasting its tribute to Harry during the World Series at some point too (Especially if the Phillies make it back there for another title)

Just my opinion though.....

Cheers :)

I believe The NFL has really ignored The Kalas Family, and it wants to move away so it can honor The 50th anniversary of the 8 original AFC teams, and The 50th season of CBS' coverage of The NFL. Also, CBS will again carry Super Bowl XLIV at Dolphin Stadium in Miami-The same venue that hosted the big game just 3 years ago...

Last night's Inside the NFL did a five-minute tribute to Mr. Kalas, about midway through the program. Afterwards, James Brown and Steve Sabol sat down and discussed Harry's contributions to NFL Films and things he did away from the broadcast booth.

Thereafter, they also made the announcement that former Phillies announcer and part-time NFL Films voice Scott Graham will take over narration duties on the show. To me, not surprising...it seems obvious they wanted to go with someone who sounds very similar to Harry Kalas.
