In Milw., talk host glad that rival's mom died in house fire

I read the comments.

They are abominable. They are disgusting. Freedom of speech? OK. But, those comments are
as way over the top as anything said by Imus, Stern or whoever. No matter what I would think about
a radio rival, I would not think to say anything close to this. This is business, it should not be personal.

Unfortunately...this will get this guy attention (read: ratings) for a station which, I suspect, is
somewhere near the bottom of the market, as far as listenership goes.

Real Christian attitude there for the host of of a talk show on a Gospel station. Now I've heard a host on a Christian station locally report on traffic problems caused by a fatal fire and said sometghing like "I sure hope that he was saved or he'll really be in a fire".

...whoever termed WNOV to be a Gospel station doesn't know what they're talking about. WNOV is an Urban-formatted station with 2-1/2 hours of Gospel in morning drive and McGee's long-running two-hour talk show immediately following that on weekdays; the main Urban music format kicks in after the McGee program and a 10:00 A.M. infomercial or public affairs block...

Too far? A talk host on a gospel station (WNOV) says he's glad that the mother of
his rival (on WTMJ) died in a house fire.
(We have freedom of speech to say what we want but I wonder if the station owners
will suspend or fire the man...Many complaints.)

As a Milwaukee native, I'm pretty familiar with this whole situation.

First off, Michael McGee and his son are both insane. The elder McGee is a former alderman who is just plain nuts. His son, Mike Jr., is currently the alderman of the same ward and he's just as much a flake. He recently survived a special recall election.

Second, nobody listens to WNOV except people hanging around the outside of the studio on Teutonia Avenue and local right-wing bloggers who, for some strange reason, are actually monitoring a radio show that most people could care less about. Most of the people living outside the McGees' ward stopped giving a rip about these two idiots years ago.

Unlike people who live far, far outside the market and know nothing about what's going on, there's more to this situation than just a bunch of backdoor racist spin on AM radio talk shows. This is about Sykes, who's family suffered a horrible, horrible loss (and yes, while I don't agree with Sykes' politics at all, I am sympathetic to this tragedy and wish his family all the best) and some crazy old coot who buys a weekly shift at puny 860AM. And no, WNOV is not a gospel station (like fellow Wisconsinite Ultimajock said). Their format is all over the place - mostly urban contemporary music, some brokered programming, and whatever else they throw on there. They might throw in a little gospel on a specialty show here and there, but that's as far as that goes. WMCS is the real urban talk station in town (when they're not running sports at night).

Basically, this is some crazy old man on a 500 watt daytime stick on the north side that nobody outside of, say, a 10-20 block area even realizes exists. Yet, for some reason, right-wingers get an absolute hard-on over it, giving him more credibility, tuning in to see what ol' Mike McGee will say next. Don Imus this guy is not. Mike McGee is basically the village idiot. And not worthy of anyone's time.

And an update: WNOV's owner yanked McGee off the air. He was pretty appalled at what McGee said.

...for however many pair of pennies this is worth, there was a period about 15 years ago or so when I was personally acquainted with Michael McGee, Sr. At the time, he did not seem to be the Riley Martin of Milwaukee politics, although I was able to see then how he could easily become that, given the ethnic divisions in Milwaukee that even predate James Groppi. There's some mp3 files of Milwaukee area CB arguments that touch upon the social disputes there in the '60s and '70s at http://www.retrocom.com/retromilw/retrocbtape.htm. Had the senior McGee not stopped too frequently to drink at the well of bitterness in the years since I knew him, I still think he'd have had the talents necessary to create positive change in Milwaukee. But, alas, he has chosen a different path, and his talents (he is a magnificent orator when he's in the mood to be one) have been applied to a shameful episode from which dis detractors will never be open to forgiveness. Not that Mark Belling on WISN represents anything better; to be honest about it, there's nothing on Milwaukee talk radio that doesn't exude moral corruption, including the pseudoChristians at Vic Eliason's WVCY. I once had hopes that McGee could fight the temptation to go in that direction. Alas, it just was not to be...
