This blew me away. Have you heard about this? Apparently they don't have the 29 year-old limit over there. Do you think lifting the age limit on American Idol would be a good thing or not?

Nah, not in America. We enjoy novel things like Susan Boyle but her album would probably never hit the Billboard 200 in the United States (although I hope she does release an album and have great success). We Americans are too focused on hot people. Carrie Underwood, David Cook, Kelly Clarkson...we want eye candy.

A sad commentary, but a valid one to be sure. While some of the biggest pop stars have no singing talent whatsoever, this makes you wonder how many great voices are out there that will never be heard.

You're confusing Idol with Got Talent...

The British Idol is Pop Idol.

America's Got Talent doesn't have the age restriction American Idol has.

Beauty is skin deep; ugliness cuts to the bone. It's how Britain ended up with the lovely and talented Susan Boyle and America ended up with freaks like Britney Spears and Madonna.

Sad but true. The last time somebody ugly rose to stardom in America, we got William Hung.

You're right. Thanks for pointing that out. I immediately thought of Idol when I saw Simon Cowell.

Exactly some of the ones I was thinking of. (How big would they be without pushing the envelope into soft-porn territory?)

Back to true talent... I wonder whatever happened to Daniel Rodriguez. He was "New York's Singing Cop," who got discovered shortly after the September 11th attacks. He released a CD but has since faded from the music scene. I guess he's still on the police force.

Ah Madonna....hate to say this, I really do but at this stage Madonna is bigger than Elvis and even The Beatles. There is just about nothing this woman can do that will put her career in jeopardy. Madonna can switch to country music tomorrow and would have no problem at all getting her music on the air. Jazz? Dittos !! Madonna is one of the few ( if not the only one ) who can actually venture into HARD CORE porn and people still wouldn't care. Remember her book "SEX"? That didn't hurt her carrer not one single bit but imagine if anyone else did the same? Talk about a problem in the PR department.

Madonna is about as anti-TV & Radio and one can get..YET both TV and radio would still do anything for her. Madonna can slam various groups of people ( gays, blacks, catholics, even the handicap ) and many of those very same people will STILL buy her music and pay big bucks for tickets to her shows.

Madonna can change her image tomorrow and people will still eat it up. And this is coming from someone who is NOT of a fan of hers. Never was !!!!

I lived through both Elvis and the Beatles and it seemed they were always in the news, and not just industry soft puff pieces either. Both Elvis and the Beatles changed the face of popular music in their day. Madonna made news for her outfits (or lack thereof, like Cher) and not any talent she may have.

Madonna seems to be relegated to the publicity pusher-type shows. She had to fall off a horse to make the national news.

I thought she was a decent actress in "A League Of Their Own" but her other 'talents' have apparently been hidden under those "nose cones".

To say she exceeded two icons of the music industry is ludicrous.

Sometimes, I think this youth-obsession borders on perversion with some people in the entertainment industry.

Yes, teenagers have "disposable income", just remember WHERE they get it (either Mom and/or Dad or Burger King) and if Mom and Dad don't have it and they're too young to work at Burger King...GUESS WHAT? They're either washing cars and mowing lawns, etc. like crazy to keep up with there peers or they have to get along with whatever Mom and Dad can give them. They are anything but rich. And it's not teenagers that watch the most TV. They have the internet and cell phones...if even that.

Teenagers are just teenagers. For an adult media executive to focus exclusively on them (and/or their sexuality ESPECIALLY) is just sick. It's just like that creepy old guy who says he photographs "models" and he'll give you cash, drugs or booze if you come to his house and "pose". Only legal.

The college age crowd is also getting sick of being exploited in every possible way. There is already a backlash brewing against the "Girls Gone Wild" producers and credit card companies and many colleges and universities won't let them on campus. And this crowd is not only powerful, but DANGEROUS to mess with. When they unite and say "ENOUGH!" to that...I'd listen....

We in the 30+ demo are also getting tired of being treated as stupid has-beens by people OUR AGE in the entertainment industry in the name of our kids $$$ and it's at the point now where we are about to show them WHO pays the damn bills in this country........

No, we don't want to bring back Murder She Wrote or Matlock exactly, but we are getting tired of Britney/Jonas Brothers overkill. And not everybody under 30 is talented...or good looking

..ah..all good things....

I noticed on the promo reel that the lady had three small trophies from local talent shows.

Someone, somewhere probably tipped Simon off and they "had someone suggest she try out".

Say what you will, I don't think he lies...and when he cheekily said "The minute I saw her----"

I'm thinking theres some sandbaggin' going on here.

Now, doesn't take anything away from the ladies "talent"..and I wish her nothing but success. I'm just thinking
not everything seems to be...as it seems...

Might be a tweak at "American Idol" as well. After all, this ladies one-off has overshadowed the entire Idol season that can't seem to get out of its own way.....

Or someobdy suggested that she try out, and they took her in thinking she would be one of the early on bomb outs. Except that she held her own.

That's because the RIAA is too busy suing (sp?) 5 year old children & 95 year grannies for file sharing over the Internet to even think about focusing on doing such a thing like bringing in new talent & fresh blood (Not to mention REFRESHING voices who can actually sing instead of "talk" at roughly 100 MPH as if they were an auctioneer at an auction).

Sorry, but the temptation to respond just overwhelmed me....

Cheers :)

Great, now those rare freaks, dispersed here and there throughout the country will start singing their blather in between music they don't know how to arrange, and who should never have gotten into radio in the first place, because of an apparent psychosis they developed by actually becoming engrossed.

isn't Britain the same country where Boxcar Willie and Slim Whitman sold millions of records for many years without any notice over here? The Brits seem to enjoy their novelty acts. (is K-tel Records still around, and are they trying to sign Ms Boyle?)

I agree with you totally. The part about the college age crowd..DEAD ON !!!! Back when I went to college ( late 80's ) I can remember when many of those so-called adult magazines like Playboy, Penthouse, even Hustler would target college age students. Today I believe only Maxim does that and Maxim doesn't show nudity. Not really a surprise since I believe there was some survey done not long ago where the results were that most of those in the 20s really didn't approve of magazines like Playboy or videos like "Girls Gone Wild", so that backlash is expected. Back in college I also remember when both Pepsi and Coke would sponsor events around campus..today its Rockstar and Red Bull energy drinks since so many of the college age crowd and pretty much those under 30..well a good many of them no longer drink Pepsi or Coke. No wonder I feel old LOL

I know there are a LOT of posts on here about how the networks and radio are doing just about anything to reach those in the 20's and younger and consider those older..well old. The more I think of it is there a more tougher demo to reach than those poeple? The most anti-TV and anti-radio crowd I can think of is those 20 somethings. True a good many of them still watch TV but I wouldn't be surprise that there are just as many who do not. To them "entertainment" is the net whether its You Tube or My Space. Ipods, downloads, viewing TV online, texting, checking out the latest Seth Rogen movie like "Observe and Report".
My sister is a high school teacher in Ohio and recently she was telling me that at her school kids who do NOT watch TV are actually more respected than those who do.

Yes being at age 40 I really do feel like a "has-been" like when I was in Denver last year seeing ads all over town on billboards using words like "sucks", "retarded" and "eat me". Could it be those behind those ads feel that since so many 20 somethings use those words..they must cater to them? Too bad they really dont know ( or if they do they won't admit it ) who really does have the most money and pays the bills.
